I'd revamp all high sticking and get away from not only connecting or not, but the stupid drawing blood investigation.

4 minutes - careless
5 minutes (game) - intentional

He swung his stick at a guys head and either narrowly missed or clipped his ear. Malkin is getting suspended and he should. Hopefully a few games.

I don't know that "easy" comes into it even though it should.

It's subjective that way and when it comes to humans and subjectivity, there is a large spectrum.

Putting aside the fact that accidental and careless are essentially synonyms, how would you consistently differentiate between the two?

The punch in the head could have been called...pretty silly to think that would have stopped Malkin considering he instantly swings his stick.

2 games for Malkin, but Raffl shouldn't be punching him in the back of the head like that either. It isn't even allowed in the UFC.

What I don't understand is that after the lockout the NHL decided to crack down on hooking and other similar type penalties a lot more. There was definitely a learning curve for the players, but as time went on they caught on and started to play the game differently.

Why not do the same with the slashing and other stick work? Obviously the players feel that the refs won't do anything about it and therefore they retaliate. Had there been a quick whistle there and a penalty called on Raffl, Malkin more than likely wouldn't have done anything.

I see a difference ... the lifted stick, the follow through on a shot ... not seeing the guy you hit at all - accident.

Coming into hit a guy with a stick to high, spinning with your stick up in the air - careless.

I'm not really opposed to the NHL setting a new standard for suspensions where the intent is more important than the outcome. I think suspending to the injury causes some pretty bad incentives. That being said, if they're going to do that it should probably be as a result of GM meetings and should be implemented at the beginning of a season with a bunch of education for all the teams. Not suddenly handed down in mid-February.

Lol? The most liked post is that Raffl was playing hard defense, took a light swipe across Malkin's head, so it's his fault and the refs fault for this incident?

Malkin violently swings his stick at head-height. If Malkin fully connects, that's in the same realm as McSorley. Malkin is a goon. He should be punished more severely, and is lucky his stick swing didn't connect.

Umm, when was the last time we've seen a guy attempt a 180 degree whip at someone's face? There is no "generally" to this scenario such that you can make this claim.
