What does "guys like this" mean? Anyone who plays the wing in the NHL?

Salary? Is $3.5-4.5M close enough??

Because Kunitz and Zuccarello aren't even in the same universe as 'hockey players'.
One is a really good player who has been leading his team in scoring for the past few years, is small but can play a gritty game and win puck battles.
The other has been on a massive decline for the past 2 years, has only 3 points in 30 games played this year and is now 39 years old and done like dinner.

Zuccarello has lead his team in scoring most recent years, is a strong two-way player and goes in the dirty areas but is small. Is 31 and looks like he has a lot left to give, outside of some injuries this year.
Kunitz has been a passenger for years, has 3 points this year and is 39 and done.
Lazy reporting, "guys like that, you know professional hockey players"

Could it be that the Flames are looking for a top/middle 6 guy like Zuccarello AND a depth veteran winger like Kunitz?

It isn't like Flames are willing to trade the same asset for each of them. I think they may think Kuntiz may be a better option as a 13th or 14th forward then some future black aces.
Or they kicked the tires and watched some games and filed it in the "last resort/feeling charitable" aka as the Freddie Modin or Nik Backstrom

You mean a depth veteran winger who can't play at an NHL level anymore because his game has deteriorated beyond salvageable levels and is as done as done can be?

Sure, but that's a different gripe, isn't it?

If they really are thinking that then that's a pretty stupid thing to be thinking.

Zuc would be good for Neal with his play making ability to bad they play the same position. Still would be a good add though if he comes cheaper than someone like Dzingel.

If he can be had for a bag of pucks, why not. His playoff experience may be worth something.

Because Kunitz can't play at any sort of NHL level anymore. The game has completely passed him by now. He's truly done.

Having watched more than a few Rangers games (because they're my GFs favorite team), I really wouldn't mind Zuccarello. Really solid player, good effort level. Plenty of playoff experience too.

Yes, but there is no good reason at all for Kunitz to still be in the NHL. Good in the locker room doesn't qualify as a viable reason because he has no NHL game left in him.

Zuccs would be sweet. Always liked him. He has decent playoff stats, and really good regular season numbers. Another undersized NHL player, but he's fought past that and carved out a pretty good career. I think he'd be a good fit.
Kunitz would suck balls. I'd be upset if we had to sit out any of our bottom 6, who have played so well recently, for him.

Probably already covered but one of the insiders (LeBrun?) mentioned a few weeks back that last season around the deadline the Flames were looking at Zuccarello. Clearly a prolonged interest.

I could MAYBE see pushing out Mangiapane with Kunitz, but wouldn't Zuccarello do that too? Bizarre, don't want him at all.

Zuccarello is the 1RW for the Rangers. I suspect he would bump Frolik to the 4L who in turn would knock Mangiapane out of the lineup.
But that would go for any top 6 the Flames pick up. Simmonds, Ferland, etc.

I'm on board the Zuccarello train. And would love it to be more than just a rental.
Would I do the first for him 1:1?
I might. Particularly if I have a sense I can re-sign him.
I don't want to touch the roster. I want to add to it.
Also the Rangers have a late 2nd (lightning) I think.
So how about
Flames 1st+Eat Bread for Zuccarrello and that 2nd.

the Norwegian Hobbit would be a great fit on this team. Relentless, skilled, and apparently hilarious.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Zuccarello
Bennett - Jankowski - Neal
Frolik - Ryan - Hathaway
Swap Frolik/Zuc/Neal/Bennett depending on matchup
