I actually think McDavid would be better if they scaled back his minutes. But because of the tire fire up north, they're foreced to play the guy almost half the game. So instead of going full tilt all the time during his shifts, he's forced to rest on the ice and cherry pick more to conserve energy.

Edit: Just saw the post about them talking about this on HNIC, so I guess not really anything insightful that hasn't been discussed. But still, it's a valid point IMO.

I would say Matthews will develop to be a more complete player because of the experience and balance they are putting around him in Toronto.

McDavid is being asked to do everything in Edmonton (score, captain off-the-ice) with very little depth in the forward ranks and very little veteran leadership experience.

I'd add Mackinnon to this as well, to have a complete 3M debate. I'd say while McDongle was clearly ahead of those two for their first couple of seasons, it's obvious that Matthews and Mackinnon have been working extremely hard to improve major components of their games.

all I hear about is how every season McDuck is "even faster!!" than the previous year. but I don't know how much better his game actually is compared to when he first stepped onto NHL ice.

This season through 27 games Mikko Koskinen has 12 starts, 8W 3 1OTL; a 2.23 GAA, a 0.925 SP and 2 shutouts. He is 30-years old.

In 2016–17 Cam Talbot through 12 starts in the Oilers first 13 games had a 8-3-1 record, a 2.35 GAA, a 0.925 SP, and 2 shutouts. He was 29-years old.

That season, Talbot was a runner-up in Vezina Trophy voting. This year he is being drummed out of the League by Oilers fans. How long before Koskinen has his career similarly derailed and destroyed for the unrelenting pressure and exhaustion from starting 9/10 games in Canada's armpit?

They have had a top 10 pick in 9 of the last 10 years, including 4 1st overalls.

They lucked into a generational player.

Despite that, the Oilers have accumulated the 29th-best record since then, missed the playoffs 11 of the 12 years, are currently on pace to miss them again.

And yet Lowe has not only not been fired, but has been promoted twice, and currently holds the title of Vice Chair and Alternate Governor, OEG

To Oilers Fans Everywhere:

We all thought this was going to be the year the Oilers turned the corner. Obviously, that hasn’t happened, and it hurts. It’s frustrating – for all of us. For our fans, for our players and staff, and for everyone in our community who shares a common bond around a game, a team and a city that we love.

I know this will almost certainly be the eighth consecutive year since we made the playoffs. I hate that fact as much as anyone, but the reality is that this is only year four of the rebuild that started when we drafted Taylor Hall. The good news, if you can call it that, is that other teams that committed to fundamental rebuilds went through the same kind of droughts over the same kind of time frames, or longer. That doesn’t make it fun for anyone; it just means we have to stay the course.

Yes, we hoped and expected to be better this year – there’s no question about that. But we’ve also been more active than any team I can think of in rebuilding our organization from bottom to top by supporting player development in OKC and Bakersfield, revamping our scouting organization, naming a new GM and a new coach, signing free agents like Justin Schultz, Boyd Gordon, Andrew Ference, Anton Belov and Ilya Bryzgalov, and trading for players like David Perron, and now Ben Scrivens and Matt Hendricks. And we’re not done.

But I can also tell you that we are not going to sacrifice the future by doing something short-term. Those days are over and they’re not coming back. If we’re going to rebuild, we want to do it right and we only want to do it once.

I hear a lot from fans about accountability, so let’s be clear. We are all accountable. That includes me, Kevin, Craig, Dallas, every player who wears our jersey, and every member of our staff. I know Kevin is the target of a lot of personal attacks right now, and that’s really unfortunate. Kevin is a big part of our organization, and it’s not just the Oilers that value his knowledge and perspective. He is consistently chosen, year after year, to play a leadership role with Hockey Canada. But when it comes down to it, this is Craig MacTavish’s team. He is the GM. He makes the calls, and he is accountable for building a team that can compete for the Stanley Cup — year in and year out for years to come.

That’s our vision. We are committed to it — and we’re confident that we are on the right track.

Our fans have been incredibly patient and supportive. At the same time, we know there’s a lot of frustration and we are asking you to hang in there while we fight through this and put the next few pieces of the team in place.

I’ll tell you this, despite everything, we all wear our Oilers colours with the same pride now as we ever have, and as we will when we’re back on top. We hope you’ll do the same.

We value our fans, we hear you, and we appreciate your support.

A murderers row of a lineup they've assembled.
I love the bolded line. No, they aren't going to sacrifice the future by doing something short-term. They're going to go full-Oilers and sacrifice the future by doing something LONG-term! Welcome to Edmonton, Lucic!

Everytime i get hyped for a game the Flames fall on their face. I'm just hoping for a win on Sunday, even in OT.

Safe to say you have not been hyped up very often this season?

Well it's kinda early in the season. Season opener vs the Canucks was not great....

Missed most of the game against the Oilers. Like I posted before the NHL is getting kinda boring for me. Even last night. I'd much rather prefer a whole bunch of fights and a win than blasting a team out with a win.(Unless it was against the Canucks or Oilers)

NOT ENOUGH HATE in the NHL! Oh and Oilers suck.

I have been contemplating this. Hard to argue against McDavid but by years end I think a healthy debate could be had and probably sway people into the "Matthews is better" camp. The way it looks in Edmonton, McDavid is not being developed the way they need him to lead the team. He doesn't have tools around him to support him. It's just McDavid. McDavid will do it all.

Meanwhile, in Toronto, Matthews is surrounded by a lot of depth and top end depth at that. Matthews is given time to develop and not worry about carrying a franchise and being the one and only player on the team. Matthews is in a winning atmosphere right now while McDavid is in a losing atmosphere.

I don't think McDavid will reach his full potential of a generational player unless he moves to another team or the Oilers management is changed and the organization changes how they build the team. The former of the two options is the best choice for McDavid.

At this time McDavid is turning into a faster Pavel Bure.

That is really quite remarkable. Wow, what an organization of ineptitude.

Ran the numbers....

Oilers are 13-12-2 (28 pts) as of today.

Assuming a team needs 93 pts to make the playoffs (which might be 2 or 3 high for the Pacific Division this year), the Oilers need to go 32-22-1 in the remaining 55 games, or a .591 winning%.

They have a .481 winning% as of today.

Does anyone know what the highest ever season-long winning percentage is?

At what point can we declare the Oilers dead because they need a better winning percentage than any other team that has ever achieved within the past 10 seasons?
