Smart GMs care about negotiating reputation. That's why you don't just take anything at trade deadline time for an expiring UFA, or else you end up with a trading rep like Feaster. And if you reward hardball tactics, the next RFA does it too.

If the deadline passes, could he still be traded to a team like the Kings that’re playing for Hughes?
Adding a good young piece that won’t help win any games this season could be a huge win.
I assume Doughty’s contract is too high, and TOR would have to add beyond Nylander, but he’d obviously help out TOR a ton in the playoffs. Not a reasonable proposal, I know... I’m not familiar with the rest of the Kings’ blueline, so unsure if there’s other pieces there TOR would covet.

Just a thought from Nylander point of view.
I think he's holding out because he knows he's not in the leafs plans long term, even before the contract negotiations began.
His only leverage to stay a leaf is to get a rich enough contract to make trading him more difficult, or enough to be satisfied being traded to any team long term. He has no rights to ntc or nmc so once he signs any deal with the leafs, he has no control where he goes if the leafs trade him. If the leafs call his bluff and he sits a year, at least he'll be a great closer to Ufa and can spend his time in another league. For the leafs, they need him signed signed for cheap or available as an asset.
Therfore, I think we're at the 11th hour because he wants to stay as a leaf.
My 2 cents

You are correct, but when it comes to premium players and contract negotiations, they bend like no other time.
Look at the bonuses paid to Taveras.
Feasted got what he could under like impossible situations at a trade deadline. He got the only 1st round picks traded that year.

Yes, what was the deal with Mike Cammalleri, Calgary would only accept a 2nd for him... he was certainly worth it too, he was on fire at the end of that season.

Tavares was a clear UFA and he took a discount. If Dubas rewards Nykander for holding out watch how negotiations go with Matthews and Marner.

That's another side to the equation, why would the owners offer the Nylander camp a way out of this, they are all hoping to keep the RFA's in check on their second contracts.

If I was the leafs and he doesn't sign, I would let him sit until I have Mathews and Marner signed. Prioritize in terms of impact to the team. Nylanders camp likely realizes this and the maximum leverage they would ever have is right now...

Is TSN going to have a special event tomorrow... 6 AM start with the countdown going and all of the insiders in the house...phone interviews asking random players their thoughts.. Sounds like something they would do and it might even get attention from Leafs fans.

Thoughts and prayers to the Toronto media. I'm not sure what they're gonna do to fill all the dead airtime after this is over.

That's what the Toronto media likes to tell us but come on now it's 11M...not much of a discount

Oh don't worry. They still got Marner's and Matthews' next contracts to speculate over.

I personally hope he sits:
1) makes negotiation easier with Chuckie
2) Toronto shooting themselves in the foot during the season they have the best chance to win the cup in 60 years
3) will probably render the nylander - tml relationship broken.

Burke blamed the Canucks at the time and the logjam in moving Kesler froze all other deals.

Maybe, no exact details...including money up front ect.
Still for me 11M for an 80 point player is hardly a "discount"
3 forwards making 30M+ next season is why they are having trouble with Nylander

11th hour trade or signing aside. What a damned shame it is to have this type of talent sitting on the sidelines. I Blame the Leafs mostly. Simply because if they know they have to sacrifice him to make the rest of their core stick together they should have dealt him well before the season started.
The Kid is good. Real good. They can get a great return for him and help their team. I mean I guess it's no skin off their teeth whether he plays or not, they don't have to cave into his demands since they're rolling so well even without Matthews for that stretch.
But this is embarrassing. Really is when you can potentially be wasting a full playing year of a player who would only get better.
Ugh, just trade him.
