Fake outrage. I'm assuming this was one bad joke and there's not a pattern and if we are going to punish everyone for every little mistake they make in their life we are going to end up going forward with very few people left in the entertainment industry.

I seem to recall him getting in a bit of controversy about old tweets when he was given the Daily Show to begin with.

A special kind of gross when those same white fans are booing black players for peacefully protesting racial injustice/ police brutality, yet a guy who spouts racist views gets a standing ovation.

Yeah it’s a bit of a mind#### when you look at it from a wide-angle.

They talked about it on CBS Sports Radio Sunday morning, I forget who the host was, but his take was that it probably doesn’t happen in stadiums with a more diverse fan base, but being that Milwaukee fans are overwhelmingly white, straight males, there’s not a lot Hader said that would be personally offensive to them. He also said that he didn’t know if Hader deserved to be booed (but said it’ll probably happen when they’re on the road), but that he certainly didn’t deserve a standing ovation.

The scary thing about the internet, is we keep pulling up things people did years ago and as kids.
I don't think the guy deserves a standing ovation, but what use is going back to something he said at 17 and assuming he's a homophobic, racist to this day?

People do mature and change...hopefully he has.

Josh Hader was in the news for racist and homophobic tweets recently. The tweets themselves were from 6 years ago, for what that's worth.

The fans look worst than Hader. At least he can say he was a dumb young kid.

Absolutely but it appears we live in an age where people are fueled by outrage. Seems like nobody is happy unless they are unhappy about someone else's behavior. Crazy times and I hope this outrage culture is just a phase that we can move past and learn from as it seems like it would be a miserable existence over the course of decades.

Are we trying to imply that the fans who gave him a standing 'o' hate gay people and use the n-word in their regular everyday lexicon? Or could it be that they are showing support to a guy who was made an example of by the new outrage culture.

If everyone was judged by anything they ever said when they were a teenager by the standards of the current day, then practically no one would be deemed 'acceptable' for public office or any employment.

Agreed.
What's really sad is the ideal outcome of someone like Hader maturing, learning and changing his ways is no longer the ideal outcome.

Some of the outrage crowd would see that as a failure because they'd rather have the outrage then a better person.

There will never come a day where I'm not infinitely grateful that social media wasn't around when I was a ####head, angsty kid.

It's only very small numbers of people who do get outraged on this social media stuff, though. Often only a few hundred or thousand. The problem is we don't know how to put numbers into context with the size of our social networks. So instead of shrugging off the outrage of 2,000 people out of an audience or 20 million (0.1 per cent), act as though we have to respond. We can can ignore anything that angers fewer than about 40,000 or 50,000 people, and the world won't end.

But we don't. We let our public dialog be dictated by tiny numbers of people. I'm guessing at some point most people are just going to turn it off, and confine their media network to small, narrowly focused interests and ignore everything else.

I'm implying that going extra and giving a guy a standing ovation because he had a bunch of racist and homophobic tweets makes you look like an #######, yeah.

I don’t know if that’s necessarily true. Or at least not the “some” in any significant sense. I think “outrage culture” is just magnified. In some respects, the amount of people outraged is very minor, but the amount of people who agree that “hey, this is a bad thing, he should probably be aware of that” is much larger. What unfortunately has happened is that these people have been painted with the same brush, and that not only makes the “outrage culture” seem much larger, but also makes it seem like they have to be catered to (Disney firing Gunn, for example, even though his tweets were insane they could’ve probably done nothing and I don’t know if it would have had much impact on their bottom line or reputation).

I still think the ideal outcome is growth. I think Hader has probably seen the error of it and has already grown as a person since that time, but now more than ever is aware of the importance of that growth.

That said, growing out of using racist, homophobic language shouldn’t be celebrated, it should just be something that you do (we don’t celebrate people for being decent) and I think the fans who gave him a standing O are pretty ignorant.

You don’t celebrate someone for saying sorry for cheering them on. You accept the apology and let them build their reputation back up in a way that reflects their change. Hader should (and will) have that chance.

^Do not agree. I think we should always celebrate growth. Reinforce it positively. Always.

Pretty sure the standing ovation was not a celebration of growth though, it was just fans being fans.

Yeah I think positive reinforcement is invaluable especially from those within his inner circle. A lot of people are not sorry or not sincere in their apologies so when someone is actually sincere and has made positive changes it should be recognized. Life is about continual improvement and maturity and every change for the better is worthy of celebration. Reputation is based on opinions held by others that may not know him and can be largely worthless as there's going to be people that never give Hader the benefit of the doubt so not exactly a great source of feedback.

I don't agree with the fans cheering in this case because of the optics but it's hard to discern their motives. Are some of them racist and just supporting his past? Are some supporting that he's a changed/changing man? Are some simply tired of outrage culture and simply letting people know that enough is enough? I would imagine a combination of all of them.
