That's how blind to white privilege people are. They can't recognize obvious satire, when the usual script gets copied verbatim and simply replaces the word "black" or "muslim" with "white". Not used to being the other whatsoever.

Meh. To me it's no different than the guy condemning Emery for a previous assault charge in the thread about him drowning. There's a time and place for these things but some people badly misjudge when. This is a thread about the story where innocent people died and do we really need to be educated about how blind white privileged people are?

This is as good a time or place as any when you have people jumping to conclusions based on prejudice and public calls for the return to a racist street carding policy.

Maybe there is a tier of wrongs and some people think their wrong is better than other wrongs?

Satire isn't a 2nd wrong, it's a tool to illustrate the absurdity of the first wrong.

Street carding is pretty tricky, on the downside it is racist, reinforces negative stereotypes, stresses people already living in difficult situations, etc. But on the other hand, it is effective in reducing crime (at least short term) and cost effective allocation of police resources (ie - the 'hands off' approach in Chicago seems to only be driving the murder rate up and NYC in the 90s had a lot of success in driving down it's crime rate by aggressively targeting young black men.)

Is saving lives and reducing crime worth victimizing an entire demographic? Where do you draw the line? Long term solution would lie in the realm of improving living conditions, but police have to make decisions right now, which forces them into a delicate balancing act between idealism and realism.

Thank you TextCritic

I don’t know... I don’t really see much in the way of racism mentioned before the Satire post. One asked a question about guns in Toronto, someone mentions gangs (accurate), and then there was a single reference to an old article about police opinion.

So if you thought that it was an appropriate time to introduce “humour” into the first page of a thread in an ongoing news story where the fatality count is climbing, then we just strongly disagree on that.

I've been following the shooting on twitter and the discussion is pretty heavy on the racial speculation. It's part of the conversation, like it or not.

Okay... that’s why Bingo installed a “quote” option. If it isn’t referenced in the thread, it isn’t part of THIS conversation. I can’t read your mind.

just out of curiosity, what's the current penalty for owning an unregistered/illegal firearm (ie a black market gun) in canada?

Put your wrist out for a good slapping. I think it's a year or less unless it's changed recently.

I think it's 3 years at least and 10 years max. Depends if you've got ammo and other circumstances.

Just a note I think there's a big difference between the penalties of having possession of unregistered and illegal firearm.

Harper tried to put in a minimum 3 year sentence, but that was struck down:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/sup...imes-1.3031847

Also, if you commit an indictable crime while using a firearm (or even imitation firearm) you get an automatic extra 1 year sentence on top of whatever sentence you would have gotten for the other crime.

I had a client who aggressively showed someone a BB gun, and ended up with 1 year plus 1 day. The courts had no power to lift the minimum 1 year.
