And then you'd wake up from that dream to the cold realization that will never happen, and you have a good five years of watching bottom dwelling hockey to come.

How is this remotely similar? Suter and Parise were hometown returnees to the place the grew up and played all their pre-professional hockey. Neither Tavares nor Karlsson has any prior ties to Vancouver.

Kessel is 30, not exactly over the hill, coming off a 92 point season. His contract is far from prohibitive as it's a 6.8M cap hit that ends before his 35th birthday.
Every team in the league is offering up something better than Brodie or Bennett for him.
I mean, Kane just signed a 7M contract (and the Sharks had to give up a first to make it) that goes until he's 33. He's coming off his best season in years, a 54 point season. We're at the point where sub-60 players are getting 7M on the 'free market' due to the 81M cap ceiling.
A 92 point player at 6.8M is going to be one of the hottest commodities in the league.

Gaudreau with Monahan and Kessel. That would be a fun PP.

I think the Canucks rebuild is doing fine and adding jt would probably accelerate it. Boeser, Pettersson and whoever they get this year are good building blocks

And the crazy thing is, at 6.8M, 6.75M and 6.375M, that would be under 20M.
That trio would be 1M cheaper than duos McDavid and Draistaitl or Kane and Toews, and not much more expensive than Eichel and O'Reilly or Ovechkin and Kuznetzov.
The other thing about Kessel is his contract was frontloaded. The team acquiring him would be on the hook for only 5.5M a year for the next four years. That's more comparable to the likes of Brouwer, Pominville, Ladd, Tatar, Foligno, Filppula, Nielsen and Callahan than it is to the superstar players.

Landphil seems like the type to nosedive if or when he leaves Pittsburgh. That's probably just sobriety talking though.

Lots of talk about the dressing room needing to be filled with the right attitude, the right character etc to foster a winning culture.
Kessel, while highly skilled, miiiight not be a good fit.
Show me the highly skilled top 6 RW that possesses great character and adds to the winning culture BT desires and I think that's our guy.

Petterson has never played an NHL game, and their back end and goal are barren.
They are years away from being where NYI have been the last few years.

If your lockerroom is so dysfunctional that adding a multi-cup winning, playoff point-per-game player like Kessel is detrimental then it's time to blow up the leadership on the team.

Juolevi, Virtanen, Shinkaruk, McCann, Gaunce, that's a lot of first round missteps in the last 6 years. Not exactly enough to give the team any confidence that future picks will work out.
Jury's still out on Juolevi, but imagine the team with:
Tkachuk/Keller/Sergachev
Ehlers/Nylander
Theodore
Pastrnak
Skjei/Pearson
Normally a solid rebuild would have players behind the top players to come along, but even when Boeser (who admittedly is an extremely good player) was putting up a 40 goal pace, the team was terrible. And then they lost the Sedins. Boeser isn't going to score 80 goals, so even if Pettersson and this new shiny toy can make up for the Sedins, they'd still be status quo (except missing 20 goals from Vanek). I don't think JT would accelerate the rebuild, he would keep them treading water just above being not completely terrible - and I'm saying that only because I think Tavares is amazing.

If Penguins do trade Kessel, it’s to make themselves better. He would command quite a premium. If Brodie and Bennett are two pieces the third piece needs to be a first round pick I would think.
Kessel would look great on the ice with this team but I don’t see it happening. And who would be his center?

Pens might ask for that, but it's an over-payment I think.

I truly believe that Demko is going to be a stud. Flames are going to regret taking McDonald over Demko years ago.

Goaltenders are fickle and I wouldn't be counting any eggs before the hatch, never mind pining over mid range draft picks from years back.

Maybe. You take away his last season and look at the three regular seasons before that and he doesn’t look too elite.
Anyway I don’t think Brodie and Bennett get it done. And I don’t want Flames trading any more high picks.

Lol so no matter who the have they suck? They have a good list of prospects. Again this started with me saying Vancouver could swing for fences and get karlson and JT. Yes those 2 would excelerate the rebuild . They are 2 studs.

If you remove his last season, where he was near top 5 in scoring. And remove his playoffs, like when he lead the team in scoring - the team that won the Stanley Cup - or the other playoffs when he was a point-per-game player. Also don't look at anything he did in Toronto lead them in scoring for 6 of the 6 years he was there, often time playing with scrubs and still putting up a point-per-game pace.
Not looking at all of that he still has left a 70 point season. Which, that same year, would have lead the Flames by a large margin. I'm not sure I've seen a worse cherry picking of stats that still didn't get the point across.
