I would be willing to bet my avatar that Phil Kessel gets more assists next season than Bennett gets points. If all he costs is Brodie+Bennett we should absolutely do it. Brodie + Fox is even better.

It's entirely reasonable to think the Flames could get a first for Fox. I would ask for more.
Can't recall which writer specifically, maybe it was Pronman, had Fox as the Flames top prospect in the Athletic.

I'm disagreeing because I disagree.
Fox as a prospect is absolutely worth a first. That part I am not debating, I hope that was clear.
But because of the uncertainly surrounding Fox signing a contract, I do not think a team would we willing to give up a first for him, unless of course he signed as part of that trade.

How often do you even see college players rights get traded? Really don't see fox as being bait the way some are. If I was the other GM, I wouldn't pay a 1st for the uncertainty alone.

Buffalo traded for Jimmy Vesey 45 days from him going UFA after he'd stated flat out he intended to test the market.
It's not unprecedented, and with Fox being American and having much more time before that option becomes available there could definitely be some interest in him. Especially with what a rare package he is at such an important position.

Reading anything about Klimchuk last season out of Stockton, it sounded exactly like how Frolik is always described. With Froliks down play, and Klimchuk getting better, it's more like a 5 dressed as a 7, if you put a bow in her hair.
Not far of a drop with room to grow.

In my mind I think Tavares has:
1.Toronto
2. San Jose
3. CGY

I would add:
St. Louis (Tarasenko, Schwartz, Schenn, strong D, enough cap space)
Vegas (Contending young team, lots of picks, bright future, enough cap space)
Colorado (Mackinnon, Landeskog, Rantenen, and more cap space than anyone)
New Jersey (Hischier, Hall, young upstart team and enough cap space)
Hopefully he wants a competitive team, with a young core, in a Canadian market but without the massive media following and total fishbowl lifestyle.
Canadian market is the big one, because if he wants that I only really see two options then (CGY and TOR) if he wants a realistic shot at winning starting next season.
I don't count Winnipeg because they are already going to struggle keeping all their good young players together, Vancouver isn't there yet, Edmonton is Edmonton, and Ottawa is a hot mess right now with a nut bar owner.
Montreal kind of worries me though too. They still have Weber and Price, who when healthy and on their games are elite. Plus Pacioretty still kicking around with Gallagher, Drouin and Galchnyuk up front. Lots of firepower but no decent center options. Plus they are such a storied (barf) franchise.

I am 99% sure Tavares has only the NYI. It will get done before UFA.

I think the uncertainty of fox signing or not signing is overblown, for the Flames or any other team.
If the Flames were to put Fox on the open market, you don't think they could get a first or equivalent? If fox is that good, and by all accounts he is, I would tend to think you're going to get more than two or three teams who are interested, driving his value up.
The Flames hold the cards here. At the end of the day, Fox is an asset with considerable value to not only the Flames, but whichever team acquires him. If a team wants him, they're going to pay a price to get him. In a league where young right shot D men who run a PP are at a premium who have the pedigree Fox has, some team will step up and pay for it. They don't grow on trees.
You're looking at it backwards.

I would add the rangers to you're list, they're never out of it. San Jose also mentioned often.

About Vegas, it will be interesting to see if George McPhee learned anything about what he just accomplished, or goes the direction of allocating a disproportionate amount of cap space to a particular individual.

No, they aren't ever out of it are they? This time maybe, as many believe JT wouldn't sign with the Isles biggest rival, but you never know I guess.
Also, San Jose was already mentioned by the poster I quoted.

Not that were in on him but I dont see it being hard keeping our young players. I'd see a bigger problem in Calgary convincing him to come there.

Depends if you re-sign Wheeler or not, and if you signed Tavares for $10-12 million the you most definitely would.

I've been saying it all year, but I truly think Tavares is done with the Islanders. Hiring Lou is too little, too late.

This. I don't understand why the guy would ever stay on the Island.
That team has wasted 10 years with him, and after peaking at a couple of 100 point season and quick playoff exits, they've gone back to 94 and 80 point seasons.
He's nuts if he stays there when many better run organizations will be offering him good money contracts, even if it will be $10 or so million less total money.
At least Stamkos staying Tampa made sense as that team had been to at least the third round 3 times in 6 years and was being run impressively by Yzerman and an amateur scouting dept that is 2nd to none really.

while i don't disagree, i think people that are saying this are strictly looking at if from a hockey perspective.
10 years is an awfully long time; one would presume that JT and his family, has formed a life outside of hockey... kids in school, friends off the ice not in hockey, close to your home town while also being close to NYC...
those factors will also play a role in JT's decision process... just like it did for someone like Shane Doan... who never left ARZ, even though it made sense to do so if hockey was the only criteria int the matrix

I am pretty sure if the Flames trade Jankowski it is not going to be on the heels of a 4 goal game in his only game on the top line. Flames are only going to compete if they can maximize cheap talent.
