So you remove the top end "internal cap" and instead insititute a "internal cap" on 4th liners of 1.5M. If we are going to pay guys like Brouwer 4m+ to play on our 4th line internal caps are a joke.

I doubt it. Vancouver isn't a real threat even with Tavares. He will have better options I think.

The problem is that the Flames paid Brouwer 4m+ to play in the top 6, which would have been reasonable enough. Then he crapped the bed on an epic scale. Even the people who saw red flags in his underlying stats failed to foresee just how hard and how fast he would fall.
You can never be quite sure that a player will earn his salary or any part of it. Just look at the high-priced contracts that have been banished to the AHL in recent years. Even though you can't get rid of the cap hit that way, teams have found it worthwhile just to get those guys off the active roster.

Time to start the Leafs rumours! Seriously though I would expect they will be looking to upgrade their blue line after this series where they looked horrible. Maybe there's a deal to be had between these two teams? Time will tell.

Tavares is going to get paid but he's not going to handicap his team either. The guy wants to win.
Keep in mind last year everybody and their dog pegged Stamkos for 10 million minimum. He signed for an 8.5 million cap hit and 68 million total.
I could easily see JT signing for 70 million over 7 years somewhere where he believes he can win.

Keep in mind Tampa has some of the lowest taxes of the NHL franchises. Its a stacked team. Also a great place to live. Lots of reasons to take less. Not to say Tavares won't, but stammer had a lot of incentives to take less.

I'm curious. Has a high-end, under 30 veteran free-agent who was born and raised in the Eastern time zone, and who has never played for a team outside the Eastern time zone ever signed with a team in the Pacific or Mountain time zones?
I've been trying to think of someone who meets that criteria, and I can't.

You're talking conerstone kind of guys right? Can't think of one either. Can think of other FA's though, plugs mostly.

Gaborik was slightly older when he signed with LA. 31 IIRC.
Hossa when he signed with Detroit I guess. And then Chicago. Not far west team though.
How old was Scott Neidermayer when he signed with the Ducks?
ETA: missed the born and raised part.

Hickey and Tavares have joked about going to the same team together. Could Hickey come home with Tavares?

Yeah. Not necessarily franchise players, but even a guy on the level of what Bouwmeester was when he signed with the Flames, or Parise in Minnesota. Neither of them meet the criteria because they're from the west.

Just because they're not currently paying anyone over $6.75 doesn't mean they never will. If Tavares wants to play here for $11M or something he's getting it regardless of the "internal cap".

I feel pretty confident Treliving said he not paying anyone more than Gio. So yeah, I'm not going to go by what fans think but how the team has operated thus far until proven otherwise.

The few on here who keep parroting this notion no one will ever get signed for more than Gio because Treliving said that once a couple years ago are dizzying.
So apparently if one of the top five forwards in the game talks to him and is willing to sign to come to Calgary - at no acquisition cost - he's going to say no because he made a statement about not paying above a certain number years back when the salary cap was different?
Asinine. It also inadvertently suggests he's an idiot.
If Tavares was willing to sign here Treliving would trip over himself to hand him a pen.

Haha. If Treliving can sign JT for between $7-13 million but opts not to because that's what Gio and Gaudreau make somebody better fire his ass immediately and quickly call JT's agent back to get the contract done.

Are you sure he said that ? I mean if Tavares calls Brad on opening day of free agency and says he wants a 9m contract, Brad instantly says yes.

Publicly? Or are you just suggesting that's how he's operating because Gaudreau was signed for the same cap hit?
As others have said, I'm sure Gio and Gaudreau would be the first to sign-off on Treliving breaking his "internal cap" for Tavares.
