Christ, I clearly didn’t think about that when I posted.
But hey, you can hold your head high today knowing that you are a much better person than someone you don’t know on an Internet forum.

He's not becoming available. At least not this offseason.

Lots of injuries. Lots of less inexperienced personnel on the roster. Especially telling is looking at the D. Hartley had to cycle between 13 D. Gulutzan had a mostly healthy D corps and only had to use 8 - until Andersson came up, only Kulak would be considered inexperienced.
Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Hamonic
Kulak - Stone
Bartkowski - Andersson
That's it. That's pretty damn good.
Compare it to this:
Giordano - Brodie
Russell - Hamilton
Engelland - Wideman
Smid - Jokipakka
Kulak - Nakladal
Wotherspoon - Kylington
Sieloff
Sure, Russell was traded and Jokipakka came in, but that is still trying to fit a guy into the existing system. That's a lot of injuries. That's during the "Wideman incident", and Wideman's wheels completely fell off. Fitting Hamilton - who was awful for the first half of the season.
All the while this continuous 'defense in flux' was backstopped by craptastic goaltending.
You also put into parenthesis Colborne's stats. The same Colborne that went on to get 8 points in Colorado the following season, and got demoted before the season started but only managed to play 13 AHL games and no NHL games this season. I would say Hartley got the most out of him, no?
Also, that forward lineup is not as strong as Hartley has had the luxury of icing. It is a much worse roster, even when comparing the goaltending between the two coaches.
Yeah, that season sucked for the Flames, but it was a worse roster without a doubt. The previous year Hartley took the Flames to the 2nd round of the playoffs, was awarded the Jack Adams, but still got fired for a poor season (and that's fine). Gulutzan has been a downgrade, especially when directly comparing rosters. If Hartley got fired, I suspect Gulutzan is on his way out too then.
|
My point was that there was a comparison between GG's present (and best) roster and Hartley's worst (lockout year) rosters.
Surely the comparison should be between either their best rosters each, or the ones nearest in date to each other (when GG also had Wideman, when he still had Bouma, no choice but to play Bart a lot, rookie Kulak, Chaisson, Elliott, Johnson, lots more Freddie, a slow starting Johnny due to his missed camp, etc.
No doubt Hartley had, overall, a worse roster. But in his last year he lost good players who were pending UFAs to trades after the Flames were out of it. So that has to be taken into account as well. Was his team going to regress from the magic year? Sure. Should they have regressed as much? No. Did he have bad goaltending? Yes. Did GG have goaltending that cost him games? Yup.

I think it'll really come down to the players exit interviews. If they all rally around GG and sway the opinion on him.

It certainly seems like it's pointing towards that way, especially with all the media guys defending him. It's almost like the Flames instructed the media to plant that seed to try and soften the blow for the fans.

I will laugh so hard if Treliving goes out and makes serious alterations to this roster while keeping Gulutzan employed into next season.
And then I will cry.

I don't think that Treliving will be so quick to dismiss Gulutzan. I think it will be a solid week. It took time under Hartley, and Hartley was not the guy that Treliving picked, nor did his playstyle conform to how Treliving wanted the Flames to play. I think it takes some time.

Why is GlueGun not fired yet?
If the Flames are trying to be classy and all like Burke likes to talk about, isnt it better to fire GlueGun early so that he can get a start looking for his next job?

Well there's only one opening right now so I don't think he's missing out on anything. His next job in the NHL will be as an assistant or head coach in a different league anyway.

Given the current events in Saskatchewan the Flames organization would have shown zero class by doing anything earlier than today.

Yeah I think it would have happened today but with the tragedy in Saskatchewan there is no way it gets done today. Especially since he went to visit the victims yesterday.
Friday at the earliest now IMO.
