Pretty sure you don't make any deal like that for EK without permission to talk extension first. I think that was what he was implying.

It would be insane for Vancouver to trade for and then sign him to a contract.

It would set their rebuild back many years.

I doubt Karlsson would be looking to sign with a pretender in any event.

Terrible...

The thought of trading Gaudreau before even playing him with a top end RWer in Calgary is just ridiculous...especially in that kinda deal

I just had flashbacks of the amount of times we all went on about getting a #1C for Iggy to play with.

I don't want to trade Gaudreau at all, but we could do worse than provorov and konecy. I don't see Philly parting with prov especially

I don't know, maybe they move Monahan or Backlund. I mean I'd move Backlund in a heartbeat if the Tavares thing became a reality but man I just don't see it.
 |
Why do people say this without actually looking or doing the math?? We could give Tavares far more than 10 per season and not worry about tkachuk. At 10 mil we'd easily fit him in. Bennett is the real potemtial casualty and that only matters if he dramatically improves. Then it's a good problem.

I think the problem is that people are constantly looking to trade core pieces that were difficult to acquire/develop. Even if there are some flaws with these players, it would be a big mistake to trade any of the following (in descending order):
 Gaudreau
 Tkachuk
 Monahan
 Hamilton
 Giordano
 Backlund (debatable)
Hamonic (if only because of acquisition cost)

Trading away skilled players who put up solid results every year is almost always going to end up in a bad deal. You hold on to skill and results. The only time you think about moving them out is when their game regresses. I haven't seen that with any of these players, as they've improved or stayed static to previous years and they are the key contributors to the team. Anyone not on that list is fair game, but only for a fair price. Don't just dump guys like Brodie, Bennett, or Ferland just because. Do it to improve the roster.

What you don't want to do is panic and trade away your best players because you had a down year under some suspect coaching. It's not about falling in love with your players, it's about determining who's part of the solution going forward and who is replaceable.

Trade anyone on the list above and the result is almost assuredly going to be a situation where you've created a massive hole on the roster that now needs to be filled. It would be foolish to do so IMO.

No. But a lot of people think the team can be substantially improved without moving out any good players. They think the Flames can bring in a difference-maker by trading away spare parts.

Fans fall in love with their players, even on bad teams like this. I hope the GM doesn't.

That’s the job of the fans, and not the job of the GM.

A poster responds to a bad Gaudreau trade and this is what you take from that?

Trade our offensive catalyst where the main piece in return is a young Dman when this teams biggest need is scoring?

Obviously there will be changes and hopefully a fairly sizable one but a Dman for a forward not our franchise forward for a 30 year old that needs an extension next summer and 2 very nice young players

Lol, where do I start here? First off JG is my favourite player and I have said many times the Flames shouldn't trade him. I have this nagging feeling after the scare with his dad and how close knit that family is he is going to ask Brad to facilitate a trade out East. I hope my feeling about that is wrong but I decided why not spit ball a trade if that happens. Now as for the trade it wouldn't happen anyhow because the minute we ask for Provorov Hextall hangs up the phone, even for Johnny Gaudreau. Calling Provorov a "nice young player" is like calling Drew Doughty a decent D man. He is 21 and had 15 goals this year and by the time he fully develops will be one of the top 5 D men in the NHL. Travis Konecny after an extremely poor first half of the season numbers wise rebounded to score 24 goals this year as a 21 year old. Going forward he should be a consistent 30 goal guy who plays with grit and an edge. Yes Simmonds will need a new contract but that is doable and gives the Flames a big nasty RW that can score a lot of goals. He sort of had a down year with only 24 goals as he is usually good for 30. The funniest thing you said was about trading JG for this package was bad because of our need for scoring when this trade greatly increases our scoring. As much as I love JG you are right, this is a bad trade...for the Flyers. They would never do this. The amount of people who think this deal is terrible has to be a clear cut example of not looking at a deal from both sides.

To me the missing ingredients are speed and goal scoring. If I'm Tre I'm looking to move Brodie or Stone for Athanasiou or Wood plus a pick. Both guys are young have great speed and are above 0.92 G/60 5 on 5 scoring (Phil Kessel is 0.93 for reference). I'd then work as hard as I could to sign JVR (1.35 G/60 5 on 5) and roll with this next year:
 Gaudreau - Monohan - JVR
 Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
 Bennett - Jankowski - Athanasiou/Wood
 Lazar - Shore - Ferland

 Gio - Hamilton
 Kulak - Hamonic
 Stone/Brodie - Andersson

 Thoughts?

I really like Athanasiou. JVR I'm more skeptical on, I think he and Kane are going to get similar contracts and I would personally prefer Kane. Otherwise I think it looks like a good start! I would also try to offload Ferland+the other of Brodie or stone for maybe one more piece up front if there's something good on the table- Upgrading on Frolik would dramatically improve the second line too. Maybe a brodie- domi swap or something similar...

Gaudreau - Monahan - Kane (or JVR)
Tkachuk - Backlund - Domi (or other Brodie trade)
Bennett - Jankowski - Athanasiou
Lazar - Shore - Frolik

Gio - Hamilton
Kulak - Hamonic
Kylington - Andersson

Edit: I prefer athanasiou to wood only because one is producing on an over performing team while one is on an underachieving team, and athanasiou has also seen ~20 goals twice now.

Maybe not- but there is evidence that Johnny is perfectly capable of doing so.
