No, those teams were expected to be bad.
This is the worst season in franchise history because of the context of everything (arena debate included).

If the Flames still had their 1st round pick, I bet a lot of casual fans would point to the Flames and say that they are tanking.
At least Stewart scored. The way this team has been going, I was afraid they were going to break a consecutive shut-out streak. The 4th line was good again today. Team has absolutely no offensive creativity.
I remember in the 2nd period Hrudey saying that the Flames were heavily out-shooting Columbus, and I thought to myself: "It doesn't feel like it, though I know they are." Then you see the replay of all the shots on Bobrovsky, and one thing really stands out - how little he had to move on every shot. He was square in position every time, except for the shot after his own team mate (Letestu IIRC) high-sticked him.
CORSI is a garbage stat when it doesn't differentiate. High danger chances are a garbage stat when it doesn't differentiate. Those were routine saves with a clear line of sight and no movement necessary by the goalie. Even if the Flames had way better possession, it is absolutely useless possession when you are not forcing the opposition to do anything.
This system seems so designed to show well in the advanced metrics, but it does not show well at all in actual chances to score. Flames have absolutely no creativity out there, and that is what has killed them this season. It was the same story under Brent Sutter with how he forced the team to play in the offensive zone. Hartley (and Keenan probably) would have not looked so good in the advanced metrics department, but their chances would have forced the opposition to react more - more goalie movement, the opposing team to run around and lose assignments more creating a bit of confusion. This team is way too easy to defend against, and I am convinced a lot of it is based on the system.
The season went up in smoke with the lack of offensive creativity coupled with the lack of defensive acumen. Hartley's passive defense (which I was not a big fan of) forcing bodies and sticks in lanes to block shots resulted in what we see every night (and most nights) - from the other side.
No offensive creativity, not enough defensive ability. I don't care that Gaudreau, Monahan and Tkachuk are out. The rest of the team is NOT capable of sharp-shooting into corners and through the five-hole. They need cross-crease tap-ins, cross-ice one-timers and so on from close in, and they need to crash the fricken net on rebounds. They need to screen much more.
The depth scoring sucks because the depth scoring isn't elite at picking corners and beating guys in lanes trying to block a shot and/or goalies being set for the shot and not giving up much room to shoot at.
But hey, the advanced metrics tell us that the Flames out-shoot their opposition routinely, and even have more high danger chances. Crock of a system! Stop trying to play for CORSI. Be a good team and then get CORSI to be a product of your great play. This is a coach putting the cart before the horse.

Who’s still watching? And for what reason? Pffft. I’ll tell you this, I hate the fact that I’m a Flames fan at this point.
Mediocrity, again.
Wonderful.

I have been a Flames fan since they moved to Calgary. I have seen some pretty sad sack teams in this town and this is the first one that has managed to get me to almost completely lose interest. For the first time in over a decade, I actually turned off the game after the 1st period because I already knew there was no chance they were coming back and it just wasn't fun to watch.
This season defines epic fail.

Flames are putting in the effort they have no talent out there

Well, the Canucks have won 4 of their last 5 missing Boeser, Baertschi, Granlund, Eriksson, Gaunce, Dorsett, Tanev, Hutton and Gudbranson. Anaheim was similarly devastated with injuries earlier in the season. Yes, injuries affect team play. But it shouldn't be this much.

Flames were missing Lanny McDonald and Jim Peplinski
The guy retired probably shouldn't add him here
Canucks have 67 points, winning is the last thing they should be doing right now

we wish...all those guys had terrible years...Janko was okay for a rookie
Ferland can score when 13 sets him up for an open net (about 20% of the time)

This is the first time I’ve planned a Calgary trip during the NHL season and decided to not go to a game.
When my family left Canada, the Flames were the thing that remained my link to home. Every year, I’ve come to Calgary, seeing the Flames has been number one on my list.
Now, I don’t want to see this. The Ownership group really needs to decide what they want for this team and whether they are intent on making the sweeping changes they need to make internally and how the organisation engages externally; with the city and with the fans.
This organisation pretty much needs to change everything about how it is operating.

Interesting, Treliving's "wizardly" assets isn't working? July's GM of the year for four straight years.

As I was driving around DT tonight before the game, my heart was warmed with all the jerseys walking around.
As I sat at in a restaurant with pizza and beer, my heart was warmed with the knowledge I didn’t attend this.

Hard not to be enamoured with the Blue Jackets either. They have a really nice cache of weaponry throughout their line up. Panarin was really fun to watch. And man as much as that PLD pick raised some eyebrows at the draft, it sure looks smart now.

This season for me is by far the most disappointing ever. There were years that the Flames had no chance so as a fan you had no expectations. But to go from flirting with 2nd in the division to the worst team in the league (injuries or not) is really hard to take. In the late 90’s and before the 2004 run we were lead to believe that this franchise couldn’t compete because of escalating salaries. The league has a lock out, right after the Flames make the finals, and we finally get a salary cap. Well, almost 15 years later and this team is in the exact same position it has always been in. As fans the best we can ever hope for every year is an 8th seed. How pathetic is that?
The Flames will fire the coach, and then hire probably the only guy willing to take the job to be the lowest paid coach in the league for an ownership group that has no clue on how to put a winning team on the ice. And now the league is going to add a 32nd team to water down the talent even more. Usually I have some hope some where that the Flames can somehow be competitive in the near future. Right now, I can’t see this team ever being competitive. Only 2 second round appearances in 30 years. Things have never looked bleaker.

The drop-off in performance this team has without it's best players is insane.
Yeah, meaningless games but still. A lot of guys are fighting for their jobs. Or should be.

Kekalainen had huge balls doing that. Kudos to him for not picking the easy choice.
