Yeah, I posted the deal on HFboards to see what Wings fans think and you are right. Not enough value going to Detroit and they hate the Brouwer contract.
I proposed:
To Wings:
T. Brouwer
O.Kylington
J. Gillies
To Flames:
G.Nyquist
Personally, I think the Flames can afford to lose Kylington and Gillies. They remove the Brouwer cap hit and get a very solid Top 9 winger who can really bolster the line-up.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Tkachuk
Ferland-Backlund-Frolik
Bennett-Jankowski-Nyquist
Lazar-Stajan-Hathaway
Giordano-Hamilton
Brodie-Harmonic
Stone-Kulak
Smith
Rittich
I would be comfortable with that in the playoffs (if we make it that is)
This will also make room for Valimaki to join the AHL squad next season and a Parsons/Mcdonald duo in the AHL.
Draft a few goalies in the later rounds of the draft this year and hope 1 of them shows some promise.
PS - I would also do this trade for Max Domi - but i don't think the Coyotes would be interested at all.

He holds a full NTC until July 1st this year, at which point it becomes a modified NTC where he can list teams (15 I believe) which he can't be traded to.

Not every player with a NMC is happy playing limited minutes (including the 4th line) -- NMC doesn't jack all if the player has struggled heavily with the team.. at some point he should want a fresh start to ensure he gets another contract in the NHL after this.

Even then, how much you want to bet a downward trending Ottawa team won't be on his list?

I personally feel this team is a sniper away from being a dominate team. In the Chicago game no one is being fooled that Gio is the only one to shoot on the PP, his one timers aren't exactly that deadly. Hoffman could play RW, seems every goal he scores he's on his offside anyways. With Mark Stone out he really has been driving play for Ottawa. I could see him fitting in on either of the top 3 lines, I'd like to see him on the 2nd line, bumping Frolik down to the 3rd with Bennett and Jankowski. Frolik is a great player but seems to be missing that scoring touch. Can't help but wonder what would happen to the scoring out put of Backlund and Tkachuk with a real sniper on there line.
Here's my propsal
I know the exchange of picks isn't much but Calgary is hurting in that department.
Jon Gillies
Adam Fox
Micheal Stone
(Helps make room for Andersson, might make signing Mark Stone easier for ottawa)
4th round pick
Mike Hoffman
Mark Borowiecki (helps makes room for Chabot, let's Calgary fire bartkowski into the sun)
6th round pick
Is this unreasonable?

I'm not a fan. Borowiecki for Stone is a major downgrade in play, same number of years. Pick swap is a similar downgrade. And 2 years of Hoffman for 2 strong prospects + losing other parts of the deal? Hoffman is not the answer for this team, stacking more left shots doesn't make sense, as you then have Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Hoffman, Bennett, Ferland and Frolik all as left shots in your top 9, with only two of those guys playing well on their off wing.

On Brouwer's NTC... I think it might a more malleable situation than usual. His role has clearly diminished to being a 4th line player on this team. I was listening to his pregame interview last Thurs night on the fan, and he talks about how excited he had been with the recent promotion to the 2nd/3rd lines due to injuries, etc, and how that's been a more regular role for him his entire career... I interpreted that as a guy likely not overly excited about being a 4th liner now.
That being said. I'd be shocked if there are other teams that would take on his contract, even if the flames ate some (which they won't).
Anyways, on the lebrun thing about the flames potentially using rittich and gillies as assets. At first I was a bit upset, as I thought we finally have a young goalie who's come up and showing glimpes of potential to be not only a solid backup, but perhaps there's more there, and the flames are ready to move him... Then I came to the realization that 1B goalies wtih potential, and backup goalies don't really have much value as far as trade returns in the recent past. So I doubt this is either happening, and it's more likely that this is a throw in for a much bigger package.
I really hope the flames don't go big this deadline. I actually do not believe they are just one winger away from being a contender in the west.
I'd like to see the deadline played out as follows:
- Hopefully the flames are in the thick of the playoff hunt, and look to try to upgrade the 3rd line winger/4th line position (ie. upgrade on Brouwer, hathaway, stajan) with someone not too flashy but some speed and ideally, offensive upside. (Byron like player). Assets i would be willing to part with are prospects that the org is perhaps ready to move on (Shinkaruk, Wotherspoon, Poirier, klimchuk, etc).
- if it's clear the flames are likely not going to make it, or that even if they do stumble in, they are just not of the caliber of the other teams they are likely to face.... Explore moving Backlund.
The true upgrade to this roster happens this offseason. Moving a guy like Brodie, stone to try to ramp up the scoring.

I know they're 2 strong prospects but Fox isn't signed yet. If Calgary believes in Rittich, are they really going to have Gillies backing him up? I'm looking at it more how it affects our current line up, such as Stone for Andersson and Bartkowski for Borowiecki. While retaining Valmaki, Andersson, Kylington and future 1sts.
Who would be you like to see Calgary to acquire?

Exactly. I'm basically expecting an upgrade on Hathaway, Stajan, Brouwer.
Maybe a team is willing to part with their 4th line guys for a reclamation 1st/2nd round draft pick prospect.

Hard to argue against Pacioretty, and shows just how good Kane is. You'd have to think they'd line up on the 3rd line, which would get plenty of offensive zone starts.
My big hope is that we do acquire one of Pacioretty, Hoffman, or Kane with an agreed upon extension.
And perhaps Smith could help on the 4th line.

Lebrun on Ottawa radio (TSN 1200) just confirmed that Calgary is really interested in Hoffman but aren't keen on the asking price.

considering that the ask for Kane is 4 pieces: a 1, a top prospect and a roster player + later round pick, i doubt Hoffman's price is going to be any less than that.
LeBrun just the other night was speculating that the ask for Nash would end up being a 1st rounder + a second rounder...
after the debacle of the Duchene acquisition, i would be my guess the Sens would be holding out for a similar return... Ottawa gave up : Turris, Bowers (2017 1st rounder), a 2018 first round pick (lottery protected), a 2018 third round pick and a toss in of Hammonds for Duchene...

Hoffman already signed for 2 years after this. Pacioretty one more year.
Kane is the only UFA

Flames need a possession minded, gritty RH forward who can skate.
Players who fit that Ilk..
Gallagher (Could maybe be had for Bennett, Gillies and perhaps Fox. Montreal looking for a Center to build around)
Jimmy Hayes (edit: had the wrong Hayes initially. Thanks, Roof-Daddy)
Bobby Ryan (could be had very cheap)
Radim Vrbata (could be had cheap, but depends on how many teams are interested in him)
Justin Williams (canes may be willing move him)
But the flames desperately need a RH scoring threat. Brouwer is not the answer.
