Pretty damn surprised they didn't go with 2 because of the previous suspension. As it is, Matt got off rather lucky.

Surprised it was so light. I thought that because it was so similar to such a recent suspension (poking a player with a stick while on/off the ice) that they would dish out a harsher penalty. Basically they're saying, "it's an almost identical incident, so we'll give out an identical penalty. We don't care about repeat offenses."
I'm not mad as a Flames fan, but as someone who wants the league to keep a lid on repeat offenders, no matter what team they play for, this decision sort of bugs me. Not a lot, but a little.

I agree it was a dumb play, and he needs to step back a little, but it's not like he is out there head hunting like a Matt Cooke. This spear and the last "poke" were both agitations that crossed the line, not intent to injure plays that crossed the line. There is a difference, and I accept that part of learning how to play in the pros is learning where that line is.

Has any other player been suspended for ONE love tap that had absolutely no chance of causing even a minor injury, let alone 2?
I mean, I understand the suspension, but it's absolutely hilarious.
He's now been suspended twice over the course of a month for 2 of the softest "spears" the NHL has EVER seen.

Pleasantly surprised that it was only one game. Thought it would be two at the minimum since he just got suspended for a similar incident weeks ago.

Yeah I was expecting 2-3. Sucks that he's out tonight still but much lighter than we feared.

May be because they just realized that Tkachuk shouldn't have been suspended at all last time?

Sounds like they didn't want to throw the book at him. Really hope he avoids rat status in the NHL HO.

I'm not defending what he did, but it's hard not to think manufactured outrage had something to do with the suplemental discipline..
Anyway, hate the act not the person

Agreed. I didn't watch the player safety video, but I bet it says this:
1.) He poked a player with his stick, this is spearing
2.) He was on the bench when he poked a player on the playing surface, this is unsportsmanlike conduct
3.) He was suspended a week ago for a similar stick incident.

They aren't mutually exclusive though... an act like that is only committed because of the person doing it. Are you suggesting the person committing the act should get a free pass?

O noes!!!!!!!!
He lightly touch a guy with his stick!!!!!!
Nhl even agrees the stick wasn't the issue. It was him being on the bench at time. He could have done anything else the reault would be the same.
Step back from that ledge .

Yeah, I don't understand the outrage. It was kinda dumb, but Tkachuk likes to get under people's skin. It isn't a big deal at all, no intent to injure... just a young kid being a #### disturber.

One thing is rather clear now... George Parros has some new policies in place. This is now six times this year a player has been suspended or fined for unsportsmanlike conduct.
For a guy like Matt Tkachuk, it is very possible that his career will be played in a new reality.

He deserved this one just because of the situation with the first one, but the first one was not at all deserved. It was a minor tap, and the Detroit player should have been able to control his own emotions and not rage back out on the ice.
Should have been a fine the first time, and then been suspended one game for the repeat offense this time.
