My anecdote - when we were in France and the Netherlands we bought cheap beer and wine from the grocery stores and drank it out. Drinking at a restaurant was a bit of a premium. So, I was generalizing that everybody would be like me and my wife. Although, I have to say it always felt a bit awkward drinking in public, but in the future I would bring wine glasses to drink wine and not from the bottle.

Are you suggesting people will sitting on a park bench drinking beer as a genuine alternative to going to a bar that has music, food, TVs, waitresses, etc.? That they'll plan their Friday night around sharing a six-pack rather than going to National or the Ship and Anchor? I have my doubts that would be all that common. Most people who would rather share the six pack just stay home and drink.

Why is this the Government's issue in any way?
We as free people should be able to have a drink responsibly in public.
Why cant I sit on a park bench or the C-Train and have a beer if I'm not bothering anybody?
And I'll answer: Because someone is going to bother someone.
But to quote Twain, thats just saying that nobody is allowed to have steak because a baby cant chew it.

If someone who goes to flames games for example, typically has 6 beers at $10+/beer while at the game, is now able to sit in front of the saddledome and openly drink 2-3 beers they brought with them right before entering the building, do you think they are going to still end up buying the same number of beers while inside?

What kind of reprobates do you associate with?
Who would do that?

If you can sit in the parking lot in front of a movie theatre and eat a bucket of popcorn, why on earth would you spend $5 inside?

I didn’t say it was the government’s issue. I just said the change would hurt bars and pubs. I don’t think there’s really any denying that either. Again I’m not opposed to open consumption, I just think the opinion that it makes no difference ignores the indirect impact.

Well....who else is enacting legislation then?
And there will be both a direct and indirect impact, but I think we should get on it.

Bars and pubs can sell to go drinks and/or have a walk up window.
I don't live near 17th but if I did, walking my dog while having a tasty draught would have me walking my dog a lot more.

'To Go' Mugs my friend. Once I got a dog it was a must.
I'm just walking my dog....I'm not hurting anybody.

How much of a walk would it be when you have to stop and pee every 5 minutes...
Speaking of...would there be facilities for all these sidewalk drinkers ??

No regular people just piss anywhere and everywhere, every 5 minutes. Just like in LV, NO, Europe, etc....

I think you're confusing 'having a drink in public' with getting pissed.
Public intoxication is not allowed. The point of this would be to allow responsible use. It's pretty clear what that is.

I am referring to the drink one...pee two phenomenon.
Usually magnified if you are being active such as walking

It sure would be a nice alternative to be able to legally go over to a park on a warm summer day, have a few cold beers with friends and play some frisbee, soccer or throw the football around instead of sitting around in some pub or on a patio. This is especially true with us guys who have younger families and need to incorporate some family friendly activities into our drinking time.
