No, I didn't mean to imply Giordano is in decline. Just Vlasic based on his performance last year

Thank goodness, now his wife can continue to fly their dogs on a private jet and buy more shoes.

Vlasic is a solid defenseman but is he a guy that's going to play well into his mid-30's?

The money is about right, the term isn't.

Probably a good discussion topic when the dust settles in the next week or so, but one wonders if the compliance buyout factor is built into any deal the spans past the next CBA deadline. Guaranteed they will be a thing after that is all said and done and teams would be smart to plan and factor for that now.

Sigh. This gets said a lot. It doesn't make sense. money and term are interconnected. You can't think about them separately.
The sharks obviously don't think he will be a 7M defenseman at age 38. It means they think he is worth ~9-10M for the first few years, then 7, then ~4-5M in his last couple years. If they buy out his last few years, it gives theoretically gives them a 9M dman at a 7M cap hit for the first few years.

We're officially in the post Keith/Hossa cap-circumvention era, not gonna get discounts on 30 year old star players by taking on a few "allergic reaction" years.
You really have to get as much term out of your RFAs and move on from all but the best after age 29.

Well then they're wrong. No way he's worth 9-10 million. I would only give that money to 2 or 3 defensemen in the entire league. Doughty makes $7 million, and I don't think Vlasic is on the same level as Doughty, but I do understand this is a UFA contract, so adjust for inflation.
Vlasic is a great shutdown defenseman, but you need a guy to put up some major points as well for that price. His highest point total was 39 points 2 years ago, but has mostly been in the low 20s on average for his career.
This is a bad deal, both now and in the long term.

You also have to define your window. You over term players at the start of your window and then eat the bad contracts / buyouts / retain salary for the last 3/4 years when you reload.

If the Sharks think Vlasic is anywhere close to a $9 million dollar d-man even right now or anytime in his career they're sadly mistaken. Vlasic is a good dman, but he's a $6.5 million d-man at best, so yes it is a long contract and a lot of guaranteed money in his declining years.

Vlasic is great but he'd be Calgary's highest paid D.
That's all you need to know about the contract IMO.

Not sure what is going on in SJ, management there is signing some pretty crazy contracts. Even Joe Thornton, I guarantee he would have taken quite a bit less than 6M to return.

Let's hope so. Wilson has been able to retool on the fly in the past, but hopefully a full on rebuild is required and the Sharks fail to perform one, leaving them as a miserable bubble team for the next 5 seasons or so.
