^ The sad thing is that I actually had to look that up to make sure that it wasn't real.

FWIW Steinberg says he doesn't believe the Flames made any side deals with Vegas as of now.

In his first season in Calgary Frolik scored 32-points—albeit in 64 games. The fact that he was much better than that this year helps to illustrate my point about what should be expected from Brouwer for next year, but moreover, I would say that the Flames are getting excellent value from Frolik. I don't expect they will get the same kind of value from Brouwer, but that is the difference between adequate value and excellent value.
The Pittsburgh Penguins won two Stanley Cups with Carl Hagelin earning $4.0 m a year. He scored 22 points last year. EVERY NHL TEAM has players on their rosters who are significantly overpaid for their role on the team. I am quite sure that the Flames will manage with Brouwer.
|
Brouwer does nothing else for the team aside from amassing his defacto points per minute. Frolik, Hagelin etc are useful players in other facets of the game and are actually capable of creating offence with foot-speed and offensive acumen alone.
Brouwer is so woefully equipped to play the system the Flames have evolved to under Gulutzen that it makes him a complete detriment to any of the scoring lines as he treats the puck on his stick like a hand grenade.
The Flames might "manage" with Brouwer but it is going to seriously hamper their ability to re-sign upcoming free agents while having the flexibility to put themselves over the top by acquiring actual impact players. This franchise cannot afford to have players simply existing if they actually expect to challenge the heavyweights of the conference.

The Score has a video of George McPhee and his assistant in the Vegas offices emailing the NHL their picks four minutes before the deadline. Pretty cool. The dude at the computer clicks send and refers to the email as the largest transaction in NHL history. Can you imagine if they received an email bounce-back lol?

The Ducks are deeper now, but it is closer than you intimate, and getting closer with every passing year.

I suggest you line up Anaheim's roster by position next to the Flames' roster. The reason we were swept becomes abundantly clear.

Was Anaheim superior depth really ever in doubt? They have among the cup favourites for years.

I can live with either. Both help with this year's roster for Vegas and we don't lose anything of major import.

Got some better intel on #Habs, just to correct an earlier tweet. Looks like VGK is targeting Alexei Emelin - not Davidson.

In any event, 35 points in a season from a second/third line winger is solid production, and is actually quite close in range for his salary as a UFA acquisition.
|
35 points would have put him 10th on the team. His salary is 6th. However he would be behind Backlund, who is due a big increase, Brodie, who is on a very friendly contract, and Tkachuk, who is on an ELC. Also Versteeg, who was on a real "show me" contract after the Edmonton PTO, but previously made a very similar amount to Brouwer.
In fact, Versteeg is an example of the possibility that Brouwer can have a bounceback season. Same age, same relatively decent production over his career. Same basic salary. He made $4.4 M prior to being cut loose as a UFA. This was his best year since just before signing his last big contract (which makes you wonder what he's looking for now).

Last season, yes. But as already noted, Brouwer was terrible by his own standards last year. There is every reason to expect that he will be better.

I guess we will see. The Flames have another $10 m coming off of the cap next year, with an extension owed to Michael Backlund. In 2019 they will lose Mike Smith's salary and will need to re-sign Matthew Tkachuk. If needed there will likely be an opportunity to move Brouwer in the last year of his deal. In the end I don't think his contract is so cripplingly prohibitive like Milan Lucic's or Loui Eriksson's long-term, big dollar deals.

Mashing F5 hoping for confirmation Brouwer is gone, even if it's the longest of long shots.
Come on, George! If there's one thing Vegas needs, it's a fourth liner making second line money who is a possession black hole and offers little in the way of effective physicality or intangibles.

Chiasson makes a lot of sense for VGK actually, after seeing the rest of their picks play out.

I have, thanks. And I maintain that while the Ducks are deeper at present, the gap is not huge and is shrinking with every season. But the reason the Flames were swept had more to do with poor goaltending and poor decision making by inexperienced players than a gap in depth. I don't see the trend continuing far into the future.
