For the Flames, it would have to be an after expansion draft acquisition unless one of the other projected forwards are being moved out/left exposed.
e.g. Lazar or Ferland goes back to Minnesota as part of the package.

That makes some sense but when is this team ever going to develop a pipeline of young talent of theri own?

I assume they would trade him because of their salary cap situation? It appears that they may not be able to afford him at the expiry of his current contract. He's definitely a player the Flames should be looking at although the price is going to be a lot higher than what they paid to get him from the Islanders.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Given the way the goaltending trades have gone, what are the odds Minnesota sends him to a conference rival without the Flames vastly overpaying.

Yeah, I picked Johnson to start as well, but was ok with Elliott when the decision was made so long as he was on a short leash...
and he was, as he got pulled 1 goal in...
so, while one can argue about the decision prior to the game starting, Calgary was only down 1-0 with 2.5 periods to play...

I'm sure most teams would prefer to trade out of conference but they aren't in the same division so I don't see that as a major stumbling block if they like the Flames return.

If the price is too high, stay away then. But if the price is reasonable, who cares who develops our players if we are on the right side of a trade.
Niederreiter is a dominant possession player and seems like he would be a good fit for our top 6.

Would love to get Nino. I'd be happy to see the Flames spend some future assets on him (1st in '17 + 2nd in '18?)
He's got finishing ability and has a strong 200 foot game - he would perfect for the 1st line.

It's a sure way to get in cap trouble if you have no capable players on entry level deals. Trading your picks and prospects for other teams slightly older and more expensive players doesn't work long term.

I wonder how much De Haan gets traded for. Underrated defencemen on a cheap contract.

Niederreiter would be a huge add. Right winger with size, 20 or more goals for the last three season, 14 power play goals last season, he would cover a few of the Flames needs.

Summary: - Nino Niederreitter's name is circulating in trade circles
- Dumba's name is out there too because of expansion draft logjam on the blueline
- Barry Trotz's future isn't secure in Washington
- Blues would be a great spot for Eberle
- Detroit may have interest in Calvin de Haan
- Wonders if Islanders will try for Kovlachuk
- Some people are disputing the reports that Dadanov has decided to go to Vegas. Still considering KHL offers and offers from other NHL teams.
- Former Oiler d-man Anton Belov is considering a return to the NHL, but that would be 1 year from now.

That's crazy. I thought Trotz was an Adams candidate this year. So he lost to Pittsburgh? That can't be a fireable offence. Or is there a problem between him and Ovechkin?

He tried to make Ovi play defence, fatal mistake.

Nino is a Corsi/Fenwick darling too IIRC and has good size at 6'2 215lbs
The only thing he wouldn't have that fits the Flames is a right hand shot.
He's probably getting $5 million on the low side. 25 goals and 57 points was a great year to have in a contract season.

I am all for going after Niederreiter but another issue would be protecting him in the expansion draft. We would likely have to expose Ferland or Lazar which isn't ideal. You could include them in the package to minny but I am guessing they would have next to no value for that very reason.
So your basically looking at our 1st round pick in this years draft + maybe another pick + one of our top prospects (think Janko/Andersson/Kylington/Parsons) + you loose one of Ferland or Lazar in the expansion draft. That is a pretty steep price.

You wait and make the trade after the expansion draft.

I think for Nino, they'd be asking for Bennett as he is more cost controlled with similar potential.

Leonsis is an Ovechkin guy and lets face it that organization was not drawing in that market until AO came on the scene so Leoinsis owes a decade of sold out buildings to AO. If Trotz is playing a hard line game with Ovechkin it's probably not going to end well for him and he's now also got the Bruce Boudreau stigma of not winning in the playoffs as the Preds have progressed to the conference finals with a different coach. That said I feel that it's hard to fault him for Holtby not having a great playoffs.

Yeah I think I'd have no problem sending 1st+Lazar+Kylington for Niederreiter
Gaudreau-Monahan-Brouwer
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Ferland-Bennett-Niederreiter
is kind of a ridiculous top 9 imo
