He's not that old for a goalie.

Extend him now while his stats are still tainted by his terrible start to the season. If he keeps rolling like this he could command a pretty substantial raise.

There's no reason to extend a goalie at this point of the season. The market is going to be flooded with capable guys on July 1, and there's no sense getting into a bidding war.

Elliott's been dialed lately, I'll give him that. When a goalie is making blocker saves standing up, you know that puck is the size of a dinner plate to him.

I'd resign him for 1 year at 4 million or the most at 2 years 7 million. I quite honestly would still rather have Marc Andre Fleury in net for Calgary next season.

On a side note why is Elliotts nick name "Moose"? Isn't that Mark Messier's nick name as well?

Give the guy a mutli-year deal, he's earned it and for the quality of play you get from him you probably won't find a better bargain out there even if you pay him $5 million per season.

As to Fleury...Barf.

On where he got the nickname, ‘Moose,’ and if he likes hearing fans use it:

“It’s kind of caught on. It started with Chris Stewart three or four years ago…Now the fans are starting to catch on and you hear it every once in a while after a save. It gets you going a little bit. It’s pretty fun to hear.”

“‘Moose’ is actually from a family friend who passed away my freshman year of college. He was a world champion moose caller. Ever since he passed away I put a moose on the back of my helmet. He’s been back there ever since having my back. Guys eventually started calling me ‘Moose.'”

I stand corrected. It's just synchronicity.

I think he may just sign a 3 year 10 mil deal.

Now that he is dead I don't think there is much of a market for zombie goalies.

I agree that the Flames will be patient and wait until at least after the draft to sign a goalie. But I am curious about how the goalie market will look this summer. Are there many better options to be available than Elliott? Are many of them likely to come at a similar cost relative to what he can deliver?

I maintain that the best option is for the Flames to extend both Elliott and Johnson, and stick with the tandem for the next two seasons.

Agreed...

as far as we know, the current Goalies that are available that have track record... Bishop and MAF... outside of that? Miller? Steve Mason? Halak? Mike Smith?

Honestly don't see a lot of options better than Elliot... while you might decide to sign a younger goalie with upside to replace Johnson, I'd be fine going into next year with this pairing...

I highly doubt that.

The guy is 31 and has only earned a shade over $15 million in his career so far. The last 5 seasons he's put up near elite numbers, with only a couple stretches of "average" play. The only thing he has going against him is so far he hasn't ever carried a legit starters workload.

Hopefully the Flames can leverage his work load history, a slow start this season, and the fact that they are an up and coming team into getting him to sign a mutli-year deal with a cap hit much lower than you would expect for an elite starting goalie.

That way they can use the money saved to carry and above average back up (like Johnson) or to bolster the roster elsewhere.

Who knows with BT though. That guy leaves no stone un-turned and he may have a play of some sort lined up to get a younger starting goalie who's age would fit more with the core of this up start team. Re: Philip Grubauer

My hunch is that Tre is waiting to see how the expansion draft plays out and in particular if he can strike a deal with McPhee to trade prospects for one of the available Goalies.

Once the dust settles on that he'll make a decision on Moose.

Do the flames have a goalie to protect and one to expose? I know they signed McCollom(sp) to be exposed. But do they have one to protect?

Bishop, Elliott, Chad, Mason, and Ryan Miller are all free agents. Guys under contract will move. Philip Grubauer in Washington is someone to Target.

Would I mind Elliott at 3 years $10M? No. But I still don't have confidence in him as a 60+ game starter.

I think we sign Bishop for 4 years x 5 mil

There aren't many other teams looking for a starter and he has had an off year

So they will have to sign someone before then I imagine? I thought I read somewhere you NEED to have certain exposed and protected players?

You can protect UFA's as far as I'm aware, they just cant be used to fulfill exposure requirements.
