So courtesy of Christopher Hayes @chrislhayes of MSNBC, this is the first thing you apparently see now upon entering the state department library in the Eisenhower office building where the majority of white house staff work.

I assume the rest of the library still contains books not authored by the president?

Maybe it's s bit of a morbid side topic, but he is going to be messing with a lot of countries' economies. Is an assassination likely at all? Would the US even retaliate or would it be like when Dorothy killed the Wicked Witch?

-We find that only 34% of voters want to build a wall with Mexico if American taxpayers have to pay up front for it, compared to 53% who are opposed to doing that.

-We find that with Trump in office now, the Affordable Care Act is reaching record levels of popularity with 45% of voters supporting it to 41% who are opposed. Only 30% of voters think the best plan is to repeal the act and start over, while 61% would prefer Congress to keep the Affordable Care Act and fix parts that aren't working.

-59% of voters think Trump needs to release his tax returns, to just 32% who don't think it's necessary for him to. In fact, 54% of voters would support a law requiring candidates for President to release 5 years of tax returns in order to appear on the ballot, to just 34% who would be opposed to putting that requirement in place.

-61% of voters think Trump needs to fully divest from his business interests, to only 28% who don't think it's necessary for him to do that.

Voters are so dim on Trump that they think, in the first week of his administration, that he will prove to be a worse President than everyone who's held the office since Richard Nixon.

42% of Trump voters think he should be allowed to have a private email server to just 39% who think he shouldn't be allowed to. Maybe cyber security wasn't such a big issue in last year's election after all.

Hard to run a company and guessing country when a very large chunk of your employee base doesn't respect you and that's what you are seeing. You really can't replace everyone with your own crew. Everything is likely going to grind to a complete halt and the general populace might just find out all the things that evil government beast actually does for them.

Great read.
A great read indeed. Thanks for posting that.

By the end of that article, it's hard to imagine any future that doesn't involve an assassination attempt. And beyond that, who knows...

I was checking into this thread a little at work today and then came in tonight. See that the conversation has moved on. Is it not a really big deal that the senior management of the state department has left? You know the people that actually know how to do their job when it comes to foreign affairs.

The trickle before the flood probably.

People tend to forget that the civil service - the ordinary workaday civil servants whose careers span multiple changes in leadership - actually wield a lot of power if they act en masse. I would expect, and hope, we'll see more of this as Trump tries to clamp down on more and more departments.

It's not unusual for these appointed positions to be replaced when a new administration takes over, or even left open for awhile.

This would be treason. Yes, it would. The bureaucracy, in an ideal world (yes, yes), doesn't get to make decisions that fall along the lines of open revolt against their elected masters.

They can enforce the letter or spirit of the passed laws and orders which leave a lot of grey to be implemented.

Actually no, all of those people who just resigned have been around since at least the Bush era. They're not part of the politically appointed crew, they're the actual experts.

These are the people that tell the politically appointed people how things actually work and how to get stuff done. Even if they would have been replaced eventually, these kinds of people are key in making the transitions of power between administrations go smoothly.

Boston mayor Marty Walsh isn't gonna put up with Trump's crap.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/20...7bP/story.html

Quote:
In a show of defiance, Walsh — flanked by black, Latino, and Asian staff members and elected officials at the City Hall event — responded strongly following Trump’s press conference in Washington, D.C., in which the president signed executive orders aimed to clamp down on illegal immigration.

“Washington is advancing the most destructive and un-American threat on America during the campaign,’’ Walsh said. “The latest executive orders and statements by the president are a direct attack on Boston’s people, Boston’s strength and Boston’s values.”
Quote:
“It’s very very unfortunate that we have a president who is not willing to lead on immigration but is focused on breaking up families and communities,’’ said Jackson, whose district includes Roxbury. “Boston is a sanctuary city and we will stay a sanctuary city. We will ensure our police are used to protect people and ensure our immigrant communities are safe.”

“We will not be intimidated by a threat to federal funding. . . we will not retreat one inch,” Walsh said. “To anyone who feels threatened or vulnerable, you are safe in Boston.”
