That could have done it. Or DMV. Those people know how to screw with you.

Wasn't it Kim Jong-Il who elevated his whole dictatorship into god-like status? Or did daddy do that first? I know Kim Il-Song is pretty much worshipped nowadays too, but was he that revered during his time? I'm not too sure.

Either way. Korea shows that dictators can rise into some god-like untouchable status with a little bit of strong arming, which is why we have Negan.

Crazy how quickly he got control of Rick too. Basically handed Lucille off to him as an act of total dominance. That was a pretty symbolic move as well.

OT but Kim Jong Il assumed control from his father, who was actually respected by his people and created the cult of personality around that respect. You heard more about Kim Jung Il's reign in the media, because he drove the country into the ground so hard.

Back on topic, Negan takes things too far, and that's his fatal flaw. He doesn't just seek submission; he also has to humiliate everyone. He enjoys the control too much. He also doesn't seem to build allies after he knocks someone down. He just knocks them down more.

I did like the snap zoom out from Negan's face right after the first commercial break. Felt like a Wes Anderson movie for a second!

No kidding, it was so strange to see on the Walking Dead. I literally rewound it to make sure that was what I had actually seen.

I liked the episode, but all of those moments with Negan being so vulnerable were kind of hard to believe. Why the crew didn't ambush them all once they saw Darryl was safe is a bit unbelievable. The writers could have pulled some of that off a bit better.

I think that was done on purpose to show how terrified of Negan they actually are and to show the control he has over other people because of the fear.

Yeah, but Rick looked like he was more restraining himself in some parts than being fearful of Negan. His reaction to Negan during certain scenes looked like he really wanted to begin the slaughter of Negan and his crew. Maybe it just was portrayed well on TV. I was expecting a fully subservient Rick to look a lot more docile.

How low will they let Rick and company get before signs of a comeback? Starting to feel like pro wrestling - you know it's coming.
On the Nerdist podcast, they had one of the producers on. They said for all of Negan's scenes, they filmed 2 versions. 1 for AMC and one for BluRay that's more accurate to the source material (F-bombs galore).

Maybe the episode was designed for viewers to be as annoyed with Negan as they hate him, but damn...that was a lot of that character that I felt forced to digest in a single episode.
I like the actor but I didn't find it overly entertaining to sit through over an hour of him gloating and getting in Ricks face. Also lets be realistic here as in the real world he would have been shot the moment he walked up to the gate with only a bat in his hand as once you take the head off the snake the Saviors would start to fragment and fall apart.

I dunno man. He had a pretty large armed backing with him. I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk an all out fire fight. Plus he came in unexpected so none of the Alexandrians were actually armed at that moment so it could be a slaughter. Also when Negan arrived they were under the initial impression that he would maybe take half of their stuff (though it may have been naive to think that it would be all he would take). Negan didn't even remember the guns until Carl pulled a handgun on that thug's head.

Either way not a good time to start a fight.

Oh, I dont believe that at all. Negan's whole scheme is a protection racket, it doesnt work if people can protect themselves.

And again it kind of explains why the Hilltop didnt have any weapons, this seems more like standard modus operandi.

Besides, it doesnt make sense to leave an armed enemy at your back.

Negan really twisted the "half of your stuff" angle too. Rick assumed that meant half the food, half the guns, etc...but Negan made it mean we get all of the good stuff and you can keep the useless stuff.

Rick's forces in Alexandria were really weak too. No Darryl, Glenn, Abraham, Maggie, Morgan, Tara, Heath, or Carol. Michonne, Rosita, Sasha, and a bunch of Alexandrians. Of the Alexandrians, the best one Aaron is at the hilltop with Maggie.

Rick's forces are scattered, and Negan's visit seemed to happen relatively quickly, so it's unlikely Rick would have time to organize. That's probably not an accident.

We also have to keep in mind that Rick doesn't know as much about Negan's operation as the audience does at this point. As far as Rick knows Negan is a guy with dozens of loyal and well armed troops. He doesn't know about any kind of underlying resentment among Negan's guys.

So Rick was afraid of hiding a gun that Negan knew nothing about, but was okay with lying about Maggie being alive, which Negan will most undoubtedly find out at some point? That seemed a little off.

That's cool, but I will say the version on screen feels more realistic, and he is doing such a good job with the part. The book version is almost childish.

I think more so he didn't want anyone at Alexandria to die with the hidden guns.

Well sure they were armed but did you see all the weapons the Alexandrians had and let's not forget it's hard to shoot people from behind a big wall. I don't see a scenario where they can get over that wall without being picked off one by one. I realize this is just fiction but really kind of silly to have the leader come out to the gate like that unarmed as how would he know that there's not a not job, trigger happy Alexandrian willing to take out a bad guy at his door? It would have been a pretty even fight if you look at the numbers and the Alexandrians would have had the upper hand of being hidden so even if they drove the truck through they would have had to get out in the open. I just thought the whole thing was kind of silly as there was no reason for Negan to be there.

It's a show based on a comic book about zombies. I'll allow them some liberties to tell the story.

I suppose but they have spent two entire episodes emphasizing how much of a bad guy Negan is. We get it. He's a cockier, sloppier, version of the Governor.
