He is not the issue, Flames issue are the 1st line players and the PowerPlay.
Players like Chaisson are filling a spot
3rd liners / 4th liners have played really well... IMO

I think Chiasson is a great checker and has some decent skills, but he is not a 18min+ guy a night and isn't the best finisher. He's quick but doesn't think the game that quickly. For those reasons he's had a tough time reading what Johnny is going to do and either makes a poor pass and or goes offside quite a bit.
Great player in the wrong spot on this team IMO. I would like to see
Ferland-Bennett-Chiasson
But that displaces Brouwer who I also don't think is a good fit for Johnny and Monny. They need a skill guy who can retrieve pucks and maintain possession on the dump ins and someone who knows how to lurk to the open spots when Johnny has the puck.
Monahan was able to do that last year which makes me believe his back is still bothering him and he's not able to battle along the boards as well as last year.

when i watch that line play this year, i feel that other team's have really tried to adjust to Gaudreau. He's at his best when he can hit the offensive zone with the puck, wiht speed, and a little bit of space causing the defense to either try to:
1) commit (ie. move into gaudreau's path) which allows gaudreau to utilize his dipsy-doodling skills, quick lateral movements, to dangle into the middle
2) back off a bit, which allows gaudreau to curl back and use the newly available time to find a team mate.
Other teams seem to have been able to position themselves to create enough traffic around Gaudreau at the offensive line to not allow him to play to his strengths.
So instead we are seeing him 1) Skate/deke right into traffic, 2) pass it off to monahan/chiasson to skate the puck into the offensive zone and try to create something, 3) pass it off to monahan/chiasson who dump it in (mostly into gaudreau's corner, which annoys me to no end, as he will likely lose the puck battle).
I think the reason monahan/chiasson look so meh at the moment, is that point 2 is really not playing to their strength of what makes them successful. Both would be better suited trying to win a dump in puck battle, or crashing the net to create lanes/opportunities for others.
Now one other opinion i'd like to add. The changes in the breakout strategy, the removal of the stretch pass, has greatly reduced the 'rush' opportunities to gain the zone. Instead, the 5 man unit breakouts, have given the opposition the time needed to get into good position to create traffic at their own blue line to create the havoc needed to get the puck out of gaudreau's hands quickly. As such, gaudreau isn't able to play to his strengths listed above.
Monahan/Gaudreau have struggled, but i think there is a large component of their struggles that are based off opposition adjustments to their style of play over the past 2 years.

For sure, if they are truly 1st line star players it should not matter who plays the wing (i.e Ferland or Bouma or Chaisson etc).
Problem is a new contract players are tense and feeling the pressure...

I personally like the new system,
Problem is the previous system was really crappy (i.e. dump and chase and block shots). They won't win in this system.
New system is puck possession and quick defense
No clue what is going on with the PP and PK
Players look to be really slow to adapt

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like the Flames play a lot more dump and chase under Gulutzan then Hartley.

They're forced to. Their zone entries are poor and they get shut down almost every time.

Gaudreau has turned the puck over 3x more often than Chiasson per 60.
Monahan has turned the puck over 2x more often than Chiasson per 60.
And Chiasson has handled the puck his fair share. When he has the puck in the offensive zone he's good staying on his feet and cycling the puck. He's had some positive results too even though most of his ice time has been dealing with Johnny and Monny turnovers.

Of course he's a plug, ins't that what's happening here, he's coming up to plug a hole in the roster created by injury.
Everyone we'd call up would be a plug, as none are actually ready or the ideal solution for the role they are about to be asked to play.
Plug for sure.

Haven't we had this discussion over and over? Most teams don't have a 1st line LW, 1st line C and 1st line RW. A so called "plug" fills those holes. Talent has to be spread to other lines and like others have said our other lines have played well. Ya, he is a plug I guess but he hasn't been the issue with that line. He is big, skates well, goes to the dirty areas and sticks up for his teammates. He isn't there to score 50 goals, he is there to get to the dirty areas, forecheck hard and crash the net so JG and Mony don't have to.
Without diluting our other lines, this isn't a bad option and I don't think Vey is being brought in to play in the top 6. More like bottom 3 to replace Bouma.
We really need one of our youngsters to step up and create some chemistry with those two. By the end of the year, maybe we see JG on the RW and Tkachuk on the LW with Mony in the middle. Who knows what we see by the end of the year. This season isn't lost yet, but if our top two guys don't get going, it will be and it will be quickly.

Perfection! That's why this ####ty hockey club should be calling someone else up. There are better choices that should get a shot.

If Backlund, Frolik and Tkachuk were to stay healthy all year, they should stay together all year. Those 3 look great together. I'm not a fan of Backlund but he's been great.

It's a little crazy but I wonder about putting Wideman on RW with Johnny and Monahan.
Doesn't have good footspeed, but he is usually pretty good in the corners. He has shown to have really good offensive chemistry with Gaudreau on the PP in the past and is a natural RH shot.
Plus he could still play the point on the PP where he is still valuable.

As for Vey I am not surprised only that Gulutzan is playing favor because he knows this squid.
3 cheers for Gulutzan please let your reign here be short!
