Yes, I think we all share that concern, but it sounds like the surgery was a success.
However, Gillies' potential is one that we haven't had in this organization in a very long time. He's going to be an NHLer, of that I have no doubts. Just how good he is and how long his career lasts is yet to be determined.

Goalies already have a huge bust factor even without missing an entire development year, but I guess most people are rating purely on potential and not factoring in the odds of a player making it. Which is fine I guess, but seems strange. I shouldn't be that surprised though, as for some reason the collective CP conscience seems to have a soft spot for goalies. Hope this turns out better than when we ranking Irving as the 2nd best prospect.
|
I agree that many goalies are a bust. But this is about prospects and their potential. Gilles is potentially a dominant #1 goalie. Even with that, it was difficult with Janko as a possible #3 center and dominant shut down defensive player (?) and Hickey becoming a #1-2 D... Gilles still seems to have the highest projection and was drafted for that...

Now he knows that he's not.

Not to be pedantic, but technically it already is a "chronic" problem.
Besides which, he was given a talking to last year in development camp, and he still came back out of shape. So much so that it was very noticeable amongst lesser prospects.
That's a big red flag for me. 1 year you can write off as just having bad habits. 2 years in a row after being drafted and being given things to work on...speaks to me of a lack of commitment and focus.

You're arguing that everyone else is ignoring something important?
You're arguing that everyone else has a soft spot for goalies?
Doesn't it make more sense to suggest that it is you that is the outlier? That you simply have more concerns about his likelihood of success than most do?

I can't vote for Gillies for two reasons. Goalies are so hard to predict where their career is going and his major injury problems. I hope he turns into a number 1, but we will never know until it actually happens. At least with skaters there is a little bit more to work with when projecting their careers.
My vote is for Kylington.

Hi, my name is mikephoen. And I HATE goalies.
Except for Miikka Kiprusoff. He was awesome.

After Tkachuk, there are no sure bets. The next 5-6 are a toss up and not one has a better than 50% chance of making it in any role IMO.
I like Gillies but a lost year isn't a good thing. This season is extremely important for him.
Poirier had a rough year. Maybe it's part of his developmental path or maybe he's just trending in the wrong direction.
Andersson and Kylington are both fine prospects but nothing that other teams don't have. We really need to see Andersson in the AHL, and some progression from Kylington, to start to see what we have with them. Same goes for Mangiapane.
Jankowski still seems like a project to me but I like his potential. I hope the comparisons to a taller Backlund turn out, that would be huge for this team having 1C, 2C and 3C locked up for the next 5-10 years.

These prospect polls generate some of the best conversations on the site (for hockey anyways).
Hashing out all of the various concerns for the different players that people have really helps to accurately and thoroughly handicap the prospects.
And it usually gets done without any animosity.

Yeah but Gillies got the "goalie surgery", which supposedly makes them better

Went with Hickey. The kid could step into the NHL right now with how active his stick is and his superb positioning.
Jankowski is a close second for me.
Gillies is still way too big of a question mark for me, but still my #4 based on the handful of games he played last year.

Jankowski. Has shown consistent development each year since being drafted and was the best player on the ice when he joined the AHL last season. He drives the play, hasn't finished growing, has all the tools and plays the most important position.

Gillies may have lost playing time, but it isn't like he wasn't around the game and coaches. One of his greatest assets is his athleticism, this surgery will make him better as he has been playing through a lot of discomfort. He commented that some times after games he couldn't even walk, yet still carried his team to a national championship.
I still think his ceiling is very high.

To me it is Jankowski and not close. Gilles could be a future #1 goalie but goalies are very hard to get a long term read on. He could also be Leland Irving. I think at worst Jankowski becomes a very strong 3rd line player but his upside is a big 70+ point centre. Got to take the sure thing here.
