He probably just read the bottom of the camp roster table that sureLoss posted where it states Mangiapane and Prybil are out with injury.

I don't blame him though. He can still develop while actually collecting a paycheck.

I would say Andersson, as he appears to have improved his game in all aspects. Kylington was okay (considering his age) this year, and I hope he'll take a larger step forward this year.

Hopefully we see Andersson come to camp in better shape this year.

This is a question that has been on my mind from time to time and would like your thoughts in terms of how teams/scouts think when they are drafting.

For example, Brayden Burke who is attending camp, went undrafted. However, he was the third leading scorer in the WHL with 109 points, seven more than Nolan Patrick, who is considered the top draft choice next year. Without looking at any other factors except physical size, Patrick at 6 3 195 lbs and Burke at 5 10 164 lbs.... does the size difference alone means one is a top prospect and the other one is not drafted at all? I don't understand why all 30 teams would pass on drafting the third leading scorer in the WHL? Thoughts?

who knows... i've wondered the very same with Martin Jones. undrafted...

seems like it would be worth taking a flyer on Burke, if possible.

Brayden Burke is 19 and 6 months already, so I guess the prevailing thought is his point totals aren't as impressive when he's playing against 15/16/17 year olds.

However 109 is hard to do regardless of age.

On his team alone (the Hurricanes), he had older teammates that had much worse point totals, like:

Ryley Lindgren, 50 points
Justin Gutierrez, 49 points
Tyler Wong, 89 points
Carter Folk, 31 points
Cory Millette, 64 points - 2 years older than Burke.

It is his size and his age. This is the second time he has been passed over in the draft.

To put things into perspective Burke put up 34 points in 41 games during his initial draft year.

Patrick put up 102 points in 72 games one season prior to his draft year. Without a doubt if he stays healthy, he will improve on these totals next year for his draft.

Nolan Patrick= Big skilled center that will put up massive numbers in his draft year. Even as a 16 year old he was over point per game in the WHL.

Brayden Burke= Small, diminutive winger who has only put up big numbers as an overrage player. Lots of these points also came on the powerplay. Lethbridge had the best powerplay in the league.

Personally, I think Burke is a good gamble to take. If he impresses in camp, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Flames sign him. In comparison to Nolan Patrick though it's not even close. You could make the argument that Patrick as a 16 year old was just as good as Burke is now as a 19 year old.

Also to my point. If you go through history and look up the top scorers in the WHL, the list is usually filled with overage players at the top that have gone on to do very little if anything in the NHL.

2009-2010 - Brandon Kozun 107 points
2008-2009 - Casey Pierro-Zabotel 115 points
2007-2008 - Mark Santorelli 101 points

The odds that Burke ends up being like one of these guys is much higher than him becoming a legitimate NHL player.

When you watch Burke play, he's a very perimeter oriented player that is small - most likely even smaller than his listed measurements and plays small. As mentioned, many pp points - dont see him making nhl, but might be worth a flyer.
