Worth a shot. Chiasson has never put it together for a consistent stretch in spite of a brief period looking really good playing with Benn. The tools are there, though. Could be a good complementary piece.

Chiasson is such an interesting player given he looked to have a lot of upside in Dallas which Ottawa also likely saw given they got him back in the Spezza deal but he then proceeded to not do much at all once with the Sens.

Hoping he surprises and rediscovers that scoring touch and potential he showed in Dallas...

I predict he passes both of those totals.

Another savvy move. Could really see this paying off. Low risk.

Ottawa's offensive system seems non-traditional to me. So much of it comes from Karlsson breaking up the wings. Or passing back to Karlsson who hovers between the point and the top of the circle.

Honestly I wouldn't write anyone off for not achieving in that system. I really like this trade and don't see why Chiasson can't get back on track in Calgary.

I'm lukewarm on the player but the price is right. Hopefully a change of scenery brings back his confidence and scoring touch.

Chaisson is the prototypical by low candidate.

He was successful in Dallas, then never fit in in Ottawa. He is just as likely as any to bounce back and all it cost was a defenseman that was 6 or 7 down in the prospect chart, someone who was extremely unlikely to ever play another game for us.

It wasn’t just the offensive oomph that suddenly seemed to be missing for Alex Chiasson during his two-season stint in Canada’s capital city.

“I’ve talked to Alex each of the years I’ve seen him in Ottawa, and he just didn’t seem as excited,” said Calgary Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan, Chiasson’s boss for a short (seven games) but successful (six goals!) stint with the Dallas Stars in April of 2013.

“Remember, I had a little history with the player and I could just see it in him right from the first time that I saw him there, probably a month or two months into his career in Ottawa … I could just see it in him that it wasn’t the same look in the guy that I had.”

And what about on Monday, when Gulutzan — the new skipper at the Saddledome — called to welcome Chiasson to the Flames organization?

“I can tell you, for sure, I sensed the excitement. 100 per cent,” Gulutzan said Tuesday. “I know he was tremendously excited for the opportunity.”
Quote:
“You see the snapshot I had of Alex in Dallas and you’d think ‘Oh boy, Gully is biased,’ ” Gulutzan said, referring to Chiasson’s six-goal splurge during a late-season eye-opener at American Airlines Center in 2013. “He came up and he played real well for us. What he does is he’s got a skill-set as a big body to get to the net, and he’s really good around the net, as a net-front presence. He still has that quality.

“He was really highly rated coming out of Dallas and it hasn’t gone well for him in Ottawa, but this is a good young player with good size, good reach, good hockey sense. It’s a chance for him to come in here and prove to himself and to us that he can get things cracking like he started off in Dallas.

“It’s a fresh start for Alex, and we’re happy to have him. He’s a young player that could have some real upside for us.”

Alex seems quite willing to drop the gloves, if lacking a bit in the punching department. Also turns his back way too much.

Here's the one from this year he won.

Finally found the old style of NHL.com's video section where you can watch every goal a player has scored.
http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?hlp=8475163

Some highlights:

Breakaway skill

Good steal and nifty move

Good hands in front of the net

2 beauties against us

Of his 38 career goals, 12 are PPG.

Sieloff ready to move on

Always newsworthy, it seems like he’s been around forever.

“Yeah, I see where you’re coming from,” says Sieloff. “I understand that, I get that. I agree with you.”

For team and player, though, it was time for a split.

The break-up felt mutual.

No tears shed.

“I wasn’t sad at all,” says Sieloff. “To say I was shocked or nervous, I wasn’t. When (Flames general manager Brad Treliving) told me, I was fine. I was ready to hear what team I was going to … because things weren’t working out in Calgary.”

Seems pretty frustrated by the comments. I wonder how many other prospects were annoyed with the numbers game? He did bring it up, kind of interesting. Bad attitude or mishandled? Probably somewhere in between but certainly not the type of PR Flames management wants. Hopefully this is just nothing.

Default Flames acquire RW Alex Chiasson and sign him to 1 yr deal ($800k)

I guess when you get passed on the depth chart by about 10 other prospects, not to mention a deep NHL blueline ahead of them, you're happy to get a fresh start.

Not mishandled, just unlucky that he was ill/injured enough to drop him out of an everyday role with the club and then it was tough to win it back with all the guys ahead of him.

Brad seems to be addressing the 'numbers game' as well by letting so many RFAs go. There will be a little less pressure on those that are still there.

He never had a bad attitude, but I bet you it was tough for him. He's hasn't been able to play a full season of hockey yet in his career, and his window is closing.

Yeah, it's just one of those things. I'm not trying to assign blame or anything, some of his comments just struck me as slightly bitter, but I might be reading too much into it. Sometimes it's up to the players to help fix that numbers game by playing so good that you force the GM's hand. No one really did that in Stockton this year, and it's no ones fault, it just is what it is. I think you're right about the RFAs though, BT is basically doing a soft reset to open up spots for guys.

I also have a not so great opinion of Ryan Huska. The call-ups seem ready but the teams have been worse since his arrival. I'm not sure how much that plays into how a player feels in a depth role on the farm team.
