Devils advocate here....maybe Vegas would be on his list of teams to play? First, it's Vegas (some love, some hate). Second, being a part of the first professional team of any kind in Vegas might be kind of exciting. Third, I believe Burke said with the rules of the draft, that team will probably come out of the gate reasonably competitive. He could say, don't trade me to Calgary and I'll waive to play in Vegas. The point is, it's impossible to say "zero" chance, unless you personally know Fleury.

If there is an offer to come play in Calgary with our blueline and too young forwards I think Fleury jumps at it. He could ride the pine in Pitt for one more ear and be a starter for Vegas for 2 years and retire as well but if he wants to play and win he has a better shot of doing that here

What a great point! Most NMCs are so that you don't have to go to the Oilers (although that should be a separate clause so that everyone can just copy and paste into their contracts) or similar non-playoff teams; the reality is that those teams are non-playoff teams theoretically without goaltending so MAF should be picking teams that have potential and need that key goalie.

Can you imagine MAF asking to be Price's backup in Mtl? heh.

Oh man, I hope Gillies is going to be the next big thing for us. I know it's not likely happening soon, we need to develop him properly, but I'm praying.

I've said it before, I'm in the camp that believes Gillies has what it takes to come into next season's camp and win a spot on this team.

He certainly has the skill and ability, but I don't think it makes sense to consider him for a spot on the team.

The Flames want to win now, and need more re-assurances that they have a goalie that can start 60+ games and succeed. Although he might be ready to be a strong back-up, no use wasting him in that capacity and potentially stunting his development.

Gillies was injured all of last year and missed a lot of development time. Not to say he doesn't have the skills, but he's not to be relied on yet. Let him prove he is ready for that by demolishing AHL first.

If we are going to go the road of keeping the seat warm for Gillies, perhaps it makes more sense to either spend less important assets on a 1B type of goalie such as Kuemper that could fit the other half of the long term goalie plan, or find a bridge goalie for a year such as Miller. Perhaps that's a better road to choose than going after MAF or Bishop, who requires a pricy term commitment when the team may not be ready to seriously contend yet. I think that road would make more sense if the Flames were 1 good goalie away from being an upper echelon contender.

The reason I feel he may be more ready to step in is he isn't a kid. His development time was spent in college instead of the AHL, he isn't stepping into the NHL at 18 from junior. If he's recovered from his injury, and by all accounts, he has... I firmly believe he could step in and be a full time starter in this league next season.

When has this ever happened? Matt Murray would be the closest comparable since he is from the same draft as Gillies, but even he had over 80 games of AHL experience.

He's also coming off double hip surgery and hasn't played close to a full professional season yet. Unless Gillies is miles ahead of whichever #1G Treliving brings into the org I don't see him starting in the NHL.

I don't see it happening either. Just saying I believe he'd be capable of it.

That's the thing, we don't "know" that he would though. He has the skillset. But just because he was playing in college doesn't mean he faced the quality of shots he would face in the NHL.

The AHL is a good place to learn and where most people do.

I agree, Gillies could succeed if given the opportunity.

I just don't see a reason why we would want to take that risk when there are more proven commodities available. Its not a situation that needs to be rushed.

The buyout period begins after the Stanley Cup finals (or June 15), and ends June 30. It's expected the expansion draft would be held a few days before the Entry Draft, but several days after the end of the postseason. So there should be a window where teams can buy out NMCs instead of protecting them.

If they don't find someone to take Fleury off their hands now, when will they? Trades for #1 goalies seem exponentially harder to pull off during the regular season... Right now Calgary is the team most desperate to find a goalie, but we ain't that desperate Jimmy.

Nice posturing though. I can see it happening for Wideman & a 2nd round pick come Friday.
