He's running out of time to grow. He will need to become a reliable 20+ goal 50+ point player otherwise he has no NHL future after this contract. He's too soft and slow to be anything other than a 2nd line winger. 40 points might technically be 2nd liner production but it's only acceptable if you have more to your game than scoring. Maybe that is a dimension Baertschi can develop? Who knows, but I wouldn't bet money on him succeeding given the rough start to his career so far.

You know, that is true. I guess when you look at guys like Semin and Radulov, who were squeezed out of the league even when they were producing more.

I liked Baertschi when he was here, and I still have high hopes for him. He's the type of guy who can't be a third- or fourth-liner. But Sven's still just 23, and there's still just so much potential there. That is just my opinion, and it could be just wishful thinking, but I really do hope for him to succeed.

I don't see Sven reaching that next level. I know he's said the right things, about how he wasn't mature or serious enough, and I don't want to come off as bitter, but I just don't see the drive and skill in him.

He has been put in two extremely good positions for individual success. First with Calgary, with no depth on wing and no highly touted prospects, and still couldn't grab a spot on the team. Now he was moved to Vancouver, given a free spot next to Horvat (who I believe is getting underrated) and still wasn't able to put up any numbers of significance. I mean he's going to be 24 with a career high of 28 points. Bouma was able to put up 34 points as a 24 year old because of the Flames lack of depth. Once the Canucks actually grab a true top 6 winger, Baertschi will be out of a job.

He'll be a career middle sixer. Something in the mould of Stempniak before his abnormally good season in New Jersey. Probably not as versatile though.

Still a good guy. I liked him and his display of skill was at time exciting when the hype was sky high. But it was a bit too high.

And re the point discussed above... Colborne is definitely more of a 2nd liner than Sven is. Say what you want, yes his season had slow stretches and he had a couple god awful games mid season, but 44pts in 73 games is quite good. Baertschi hasn't yet eclipsed 30. Agree with the poster about 'projected' stats. A lot of players have fast starts, even over a PPG starts for some, but in most cases they fall back to earth after enough games. Look at Draisaitl even Hall last season. Over the course of a full season it evened out quiet noticeably, as pointless stretch will naturally occur at times for all players. Even McDavid was coming down a bit after about 30 games played. Only a handful of players buck that trend and up their point per game production signifiantly late into a full season. Crosby is one of the few (look at that last half) and Iggy back in the day would come on late.

Defining a 2nd liner is a good discussion to have, though, as I think "2nd line" wingers are the area we're most in need of currently.

Does Colborne satisfy one of those 2nd line spots for the coming seasons if he produces like he did in his second half? Or do people think the lack of grit despite his size makes him not effective enough? He (albeit quietly) has the production now.

Bob is likely making more money than Sven still this year (to do nothing I might add) and will likely be making more money than Sven again next year when he gets his next gig.

So I'd say Bob is still ahead

Well....Bob got fired but hes still collecting his salary which, since theres no escrow for coaches, is likely more than Sven's.

And, at the end of the day, the person most responsible for Sven's travails is...well...Sven.

Hartley getting fired and Baertschi getting a typical bridge contract from the Canucks aren't even related. He just took completely separate events and tried to relate them.

In the end Hartley is fired, Baertschi got a new 2 year deal and will probably get 20 goals this year.

If there's a war Baertschi will win, 99% of the time players always do.

Hartley was coach of the year and took this team to the second round for only the 2nd time in 26 years the year Baertschi got the boot. I wouldn't say Sven won the battle.

Since we're comparing the two players, I think I'd rather go with Colborne even though he admittedly does not use his size to its potential. Despite this, he's heavier and bigger and therefore the preferred player.

Their production as far as I'm concerned is essentially equal given both player's inconsistency.
