CapFriendly @CapFriendly
#CapFriendly can confirm that #Panthers will have a bonus overage of roughly $1.42M next season. Trading Gudbranson also saves FLA cap space

It seems like they had the trade done and Benning called back to say "How about I throw in another 2nd round pick?"

I don't think they can play for the rest of the regular season either. Thought only players signed to a contract after the trade deadline can play regular season and not playoffs. I could be wrong though.

I haven't looked at the draft outside the top 10 this year. Can anyone give me an idea of what kind of players are available at 33 and 35?

I do think hes a good drafter

but this trade and Shinkaruk/Granlund are both value vs upside

Gudbranson is a 4th d man and putting him with a great puck mover like Hutton should work, but McCann as a 19 year old put up number that a lot of guys who turned in to very good scorers did, he may be too small, he may end up on the wing, or he may be Logan Couture

Granlund is going to slot in as their 4C next year and in that role he's above average at it and could at times move up to the 3rd line and not look out of place, but Shinkaruk might end up a 25-30 goal scorer, he may also end up an AHL goal scorer but the chance for success is there

he's been lucky so far that his trades so far don't look super bad because the pieces he's given away haven't turned out great, but it is an issue, and it means he needs to keep hitting on the draft like he has the last 2 seasons which is hard to do

You're thinking of the old McAmmond loophole, in which a player can't be traded from and back to a team in the same season. That rule doesn't exist anymore, IIRC. Nah, the rule is that you can't play in the playoffs, but you can play in the rest of the regular season.

Nonis is the guy who built the Canucks Cup contending team. Gillis just managed to reap all the credit for it somehow.

TSN is reporting the picks are for 2017. If that's the case, it's not as bad as 2016, although I guess Canucks can finish bottom 3 again next year.

Benson is the one everyone in Vancouver wanted, was the 1st overall pick in the WHL bantam draft, struggled with injuries here but could end up being a real good big body winger

So you're saying that Benning drafted McCann, then - less than 2 years later - decided he doesn't fit what he's trying to build?

Awesome.

I fricking LOVE Benning as the Nuck GM (and I admit I actually wanted the Flames to hire him - thank God we dodged that bullet!)

Burke pulling off the heist of the decade with picking the only 2 good players in the 1999 NHL 1st round and them turning out to be Art Ross/Hart Trophy winners is basically what did it

Yes, but that was what 12-13 years prior. There was a lot of depth on those contending teams and Nonis brought most of it in. Heck, even the coach was his hire.

Anyways. I'm way off topic here.

Gudbranson is a player I'd definitely take on the Flames. By the sounds of it he's a younger version of Engelland. We need big bruisers on our bottom pair and if he manages to get the same salary, Gudbranson > Engelland.
