My in-laws managed to drive south, but no word from them yet. Last we spoke they didn't think they had enough gas to make it past grasslands

Most of the larger sites have paved runways capable of landing commercial jets.

We have a functioning airport on site. We have fuel as well as food and water, but with the onset of evacuees and the regular staff, they are asking for shrewd use of resources. I am sure, if there is a need, they will fly in resources, or fly people out.

Good friends made it out with their 3 year old daughter, cat and two dogs packed in the truck that now has partially melted trim. They're in surprisingly good spirits, although they have no idea whether they still have a house. I can't even imagine.

"climate change is the real truth behind wildfires/loss of homes & lives" is so so so many times more idiotic than climate change denial.

No. Nobody had to say it. You are making a totally unfounded correlation and taking advantage of tragedy to get on your social justice soapbox. It takes a special kind of idiot to do that.

I thought that was the case there, with the amount of strips able to handle commercial traffic getting supplies up quickly should be possible. Looks like WestJet had some more charter flights today, my buddy flies for Suncor and I'm sure they are going flat out with their fleet too.

Having gone through the flood my thoughts are with everyone up there, I'd take water again any day over fire.

My brother made it to firebag camp. He's safe and sound finally. Some guys filled his tank just before he ran out of gas and he had picked up some stragglers that had run out of gas. It's his goddam birthday today. Awful

Pretty good birthday I would think, all things considered.

Shout out to all the emergency responders and volunteers helping. The fact that very few injuries and no deaths (knock on wood) have been reported yet is IMO nothing short of a miracle.

As devastating as these fires are, I'm so extremely grateful to live in a country like Canada where we can depend on our first responders and citizens to step up and help others in need. Many other poorer places around the world, faced with a situation like this, would not get the same quality of help that the people of FMM are getting now.

I think everyone in Alberta has some sort of connection to FMM. We all know someone who lives/has lived there and many of us have friends in the oil industry who work up north.

The town WILL rebuild and be stronger then ever. But this is such devastating news.

CNN managed to stop its all Trump all the time reporting to mention the fire in "Alberta Canada". They said conditions will get much worse today. I'm not sure if they had cameras there or just used existing footage.

I know someone who owned a condo in that condemned building...the horwood condos I think. They lost it all then. Started over with a house. Now this.

Is this 100% insurable with most residential policies?

All fires in the city of Fort McMurray are currently out, but officials are warning that with hot and dry weather conditions, the situation could worsen again at any time.

Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Fire Chief Darby Allen told reporters Wednesday that crews managed to get some of the blazes in town under control, but there are still concerns about fires outside the northern Alberta city.

“Firefighting staff have worked throughout the night, and all fires within the city have been extinguished,” Allen said.

The Penhorwood condos. I lived there too but thankfully I was only renting. People lost a lot from that debacle. Hopefully their house will survive this.

The structure should be 100% insurable but contents will have limits. Of course its different for everyone and every company. Insurance companies only need to get emergency funds for hotels and living expenses that is the priority, sad truth is that the houses although insured will not be rebuilt any time soon.

Does anyone have a good understanding of the extent of damage? I'm getting confused by the way that the media is portraying it.

I'm hearing stuff ranging from 80% of Fort Mac is gone (I think some people are being sensationalist), to 80% of Beacon Hill and Wood Buffalo... but I can't wrap my mind around what that actually means and which report is correct.

Sorry if wrong place to ask.
