Firstly, nobody that played for the Flames should get ridiculed for whatever reason on their way out, unless they demanded a trade or did something to disrespect the team itself. Jones put his time here, and deserves some respect for it, regardless of how people felt about his overall contributions.
As for this trade, there are a number of ways to think about it, and they all kind of make sense.
First and foremost, the Flames obtained a 6th round pick for a player that they were looking like they wouldn't re-sign. If you are a Jones fan, you should probably be happy, as I am not sure he would get another NHL contract with his numbers, and with the cap looking like it is falling. Lots of cap casualty players leaving the NHL earlier in their careers as they are getting pushed out by younger guys on ELCs. Jones at least now has a chance to show the rest of the NHL that perhaps he is deserving of another deal. I don't think that would happen any longer in Calgary.
Backstrom - you can look at it as the Flames took a contract back to even out the cap. You can look at it as practically a 100% salary cap retention trade. You can look at it as the Flames bringing in a respected Finnish goalie to perhaps guide Ortio for the rest of the season before deciding on him. Any way you slice it, this will really not change the rest of the season. There are no playoffs this year, and nobody is going to ride Ortio or anyone else hard. This is a time to see what the organization has.
As for Backstrom playing or not - I would almost guarantee one start from him (as long as he is in shape) - I bet Hartley starts him against the next Wild game. IIRC, they play in Minnesota, so that is a good opportunity to give a notable goalie a 'send-off' of sorts. I think it is probably the classy thing to do - as long as he is in relative game shape.
Bottom line is that this trade brought back an asset (6th round pick) and opened up an additional roster spot to audition prospects/give them a bit of a carrot for their hard work in Stockton. It MAY also be beneficial to Ortio in having a well-respected Finnish goalie to talk to for the rest of the season and help him along.
I thought that they were going to get rid of Jones, and that it would call for full retention with a late pick back (7th round, or even future considerations). He was just holding a roster spot at the moment, and nothing more. This was good for the Flames, Backstrom and Jones - so there is little to be upset at with respect to this trade.

Does it open a roster spot though? 1 player out, 1 player in, right? Back to having three terrible goalies instead of two. Time will tell if that is worth a sixth round draft pick but to me this deal is just so meh why even bother. I'm not for or against this trade. Completely indifferent actually.
Unless Backstrom can play up front it still opens up an opportunity for a forward prospect to get in the line-up. Even if they are going to give Backstrom a couple of games in net, I'm suspecting Ortio will get to start at least 10 of the remaining 20 starts, unless he totally stinks it up.

After the deadline, the 23-man roster limit is lifted. However, you can still only dress 18 skaters and 2 goalies for a game.
By trading Jones, the Flames opened up room to dress another skater in his place. But adding Backstrom makes no difference one way or the other, since he'll presumably be the #3 goalie and won't dress for games. Net effect: one spot opens up in the lineup.

A 10-15 goal, 20-30 point third liner is definitely worth more than a 6th, and to be honest, I wouldn't have minded atleast having the rights to sign him to $1-$1.5 a season for bottom 6 duty if any of the minor leaguers weren't ready to replace him next year. I mean it's not like Stajan/Bouma/Jooris/Bollig have been much better this year than him, if at all

Watching the video on the Flames site, Jones is excited to be going to a potential playoff team. It may be his last chance and kudos to the Flames for giving it to him. This good treatment is noticed around the league by players and could be more important than holding out for more value.

No they aren't. Not yesterday they weren't.
Jones has been an ineffective player for the vast majority of the season, no matter the role.
Hathaway was more effective in one game last night than Jones has been all year.

Seeing as guys like Vrbata and Parenteau didn't get traded for anything yesterday I don't think that is accurate.

I'm not a fan of the deal. The Flames are getting a 6th for swapping contracts, it's not like they are saving money on the deal at all. The only way this makes sense to me is if they use it as an opportunity to audition Backstrom for a cheap contract (less than 1m) next year.
Also for the the comments/questions about his health. He has not been injured at all this year. Minnesota just moved on after they signed Kuemper and Dubnyk; they literally never gave him a chance this year despite him being healthy. Backstrom while unhappy with being the 3rd stringer in Minnesota has not been a distraction for his team and I think that says a lot about his character.
Who really cares if they are saving money. There are no cap issues through the end of the year so it is only about the team saving money, not something I really care about.
I was surprised they got anything for Jones. The definition of a minor trade, something is better than nothing I guess.

Would you prefer to have Jones on the roster? They basically bought a 6th round pick. This is basically a nothing trade except the Flames get the chance to add someone for their protected list and see if they develop and are worth signing for 2 to 4 years.
As much as Backstrom wouldn't be a long term option, if he returns to his form before the injury, he could be an option as a cheap backup on a 1 year deal.
Obviously he wouldn't be the first option, but why not take a look. At worst he plays a couple games, struggles and is never heard from again. Best case is that he becomes a cheap backup for next season's starter, whomever that is.

However, I am hearing Backstrom could be in net often in #Flames final 19 games . No exact number but team wants to see 38 year old
If Jones is on the roster we may not see Garnet Hathaway play yesterday (debatable since Hudler is also gone). From that perspective, I think we've already won the trade.

I don't get that at all (having him come in and play games). If this was Lou he would tell him to stay in Minnesota. It serves no purpose.
It's probably part of the agreement that they made with him to waive his NMC so the deal could be made. Personally, I don't think it's a big deal. It's not like the Flames are still battling for a playoff spot.
