He is a UFA. So do the Flames trade him for a 3rd round pick and a conditional 2nd provided he signs a long term deal with Dallas?
I don't think so.

Russell after the morning skate:
Quote:
Fresh off the ice at morning skate in Philadelphia and wearing a Flames cap, Calgary defenceman Kris Russell met briefly with reporters. "I’m just in the mindset that until I hear any different, I’m a Calgary Flame," he said. "I'm just going to get ready to play tonight."

He would look like a big idiot if Russell didn't get moved.
My guess is that a trade call should be coming soon.

-Kris Russell sucks/Kris Russell is awesome!

When is the game after the 20th game he would be suspended? That'd be the very latest he would be returning.

The arbitrator isn't locked at 20. Highly unlikely he goes later, but there's a risk

5 years ago Burke took Boston to the wood shed getting a 1st, Colburne and a conditional 2nd ( that the Leafs got) for Kaberle who ended up being a bottom pair d-man in the playoff run

Because if they trade him this year, they have to package assets (draft picks) to move him, if they wait till next deadline when he is a UFA, they trade him without needing to package assets; they will just need him to waive.
It's smart asset management to just bite the bullet with Wideman for another year.

Agreed. Unless Wideman is netting you something positive, I'd hold onto him until next year. If he has a bounceback year, he could go for something decent next trade deadline.

And Boston won the cup - so really even though Kaberle was bottom pairing they would probably make that trade again.
Colborne ended up being wavier eligible player that landed them a 4th, 1st rounder turned into Tyler Biggs, and the 2nd rounder into John-Michael Liles. Didn't end up being a great deal for Toronto.

Wideman will be next year's Glencross. Let him build up some value back in his contract year (literally could not be any lower right now) and then ship him at the deadline (addition by subtraction for us).

Who would anyone want to add Wideman seriously...besides the salary and the player the refs will also hate you

Dreger says things are heating up with regards to Russell and Hamhuis.
Says the Stars might do something remarkable here (i.e. acquire both)

It'll be fascinating how the Stars do acquire both players. That'd be a massive coup too.

The Stars are awesome this year. Really starting to like them and how they're really going for it.
I'm hoping for a Stars - Capitals final with the Caps winning
Cause Hemsky can never win a cup. Ever.

For the Stars to get both D-men then there would certainly be more than draft picks involved.
