the Flames have no leverage with Russell. It is pretty obvious that having spent 17M on their top 3 D-men plus having Wideman's 5M for 1 more year that the Flames will no be resigning Russell. With Iginla there definitely was the option of the Flames keeping him so he could retire as a Flame.
At the very best Russell will be the #4 D-man on the Flames.
As the teams wait it out and Hamhuis is still out there the clock is ticking and the late 2nd or 3rd round picks that may have been out there are being down graded.
The other teams in the league are going to take advantage of the Cap problems the Flames have gotten themselves into.

Worse than that for Flames fans, Brad is running out of assets acquired by Feaster to trade. The vast majority o assets that Brad has acquired are untradeable (Hiller, Raymond, Engelland). Thankfully he has some of these Feaster assets to move like Hudler and Russell.

Can you guys imagine the phone calls?
I'll give you a 2nd for Hudler
That's not enough
It's all I'm willing to pay
But I got a 2nd and a 3rd for Glencross last year and Hudler is better

How do our cap problems have anything to do with Russell's value as a rental?

It is interesting that almost the exact same thing happened with Russell in St.L.
He went from being their #4 d-man in their only playoff series winning team in a decade to being worthless to the Blues and traded to a bottom dweller for a 6th round pick.
He became totally un-keepable when the Blues got Bouwmeester and was done as a Flame when we signed Hamilton.

Many posters building up Russell's value to a point where they'll be disappointed when its something like a 2nd and a 3rd or a 2nd and some med level prospect.

There's a lot of teams looking for defence including: Boston, Florida, Tampa, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Washington, Dallas., Colorado and the Islanders. It's believed all those teams have called Calgary GM Brad Treliving to express an interest in blueliner Kris Russell.

He has no value to the Flames. The other teams know that the Flames have to trade him or lose him for nothing.
All this BS about only being 1.5M apart is a very flimsy story....
It is pretty obvious that the Flames are not going to sign Russell for $4M and low ball Gaudreau and Monahan..... Hopefully anyway.
Getting rid of Wideman does not provide cap relief either as that $ should be ear-marked for Bennett.
Here is a spread sheet that Incogito put together that shows the cap realities of the Flames next year... Not quite up to date but other GMs are going to be aware of the corner Trevling has painted himself into

It's not 1 team vs the flames. 10 teams will be bidding against each other and don't know what each team is offering. Has nothing to do with the Flames cap situation when there's that much interest.

I still see a good return for Russell. If it's a 2nd + prospect or whatever. The fact is the rebuild is ahead of schedule, and I'm proud of how the team stacks up to other rebuilding teams!
Go Flames Go!!!

If Russell gets you a 2nd thats a good improvement on the 6th paid or whatever it was.
A FA got the Flames two picks yesterday. That's good too.
If BT can get rid of a couple of bad contract and a UFA like Jones that would be awesome.

in that list of 10 teams you think the teams in the west lost the tapes of the 5 games against the Ducks where Russell was over powered and overmatched and ended up a -8.
There are no playoff contenders in the west that Russell matches up well against. Vancouver is not making the playoffs this year.

Well if you've been following the rumours and CP threads this deadline, apparently many NHL scouts and GMs disagree with you.
You can cherry pick 5 games from last year's playoffs when Russell was beat up and playing over his head due to Gio being out, if you think that helps your argument. The point stands that there's apparently a ton of interest in Russell and the fact that "the flames have no leverage on him because of the cap" means dick all.

Temper your enthusiasm.... Cammalleri was a top scoring winger who had a history of being the best player on a team in a playoff run. He was going to sign for > 6M the next year. He would have been top 6 on any playoff team that they could all afford him as a rental. He was the perfect playoff rental and yet the bidding war never happened.

Do you include the rumour that the Flames offered Russell 4M to be their long term #4 d man.
Ie I am pointing out a rumour that would be so absurd as to be totally unbelievable. If your rumour source can make that sort of thing up how can you give any credence to the rumours in general.

Again sure you can cherry pick one situation if it suits your argument.
Regarding ^, you're all over the map. I was just responding to your assertion that the Flames have no leverage with Russell cap-wise and therefore it decreases his value. I don't want to get into debate about the validity of rumour sources
