The oilers have only lost the lottery 2 times in the last decade
Even with the new system in place they will most likely draft first or 2nd.
No one sucks as hard as the oilers do. Fact. They cruzed ( pun intended) their way to a top 2 pick again.

If they finish last they will have a 37.5% chance of drafting top two. So it's most likely that they don't draft first or second. 62.5% chance they don't to be precise.

Meh. Heated debate. Steinberg as we are aware likes FlamesNation (which is fair for a sports radio personality who appears to be passionate about the game and who does not give the impression that he has ever played it or has developed a career based on observing multiple leagues and building a real base of credibility other than watching and discussing the local pro team) and thinks too often that he can make a case for or against a player based on conclusions reached by "advanced stats". I get it, he is not a hockey career lifer with a broad base of experience from watching many leagues and levels as part of his development. He has learned the ropes in a different way. No foul, but playing devils advocate largely based on Internet research is part of what he was trying to do.
Steinberg is passionate and trying his best but he is really a combo of Flames fan and radio guy, not a hockey lifer, and Loubo was right, he often expresses opinions which can be traced back to charts.
I read the same crap that Pat reads and sometimes agree and sometimes disagree. I don't see this as a big dramatic event, just two guys with different perspectives.

Can we get an apology for the sentence structure? That first sentence ran on so long someone should have passed it a bottle of water at the half way mark.

Ha, that is fair. I thought the parentheses made it excusable
My apologies

All good... once I got it I actually agreed with you.
I saw where both of them were coming from but man it was getting awkward.
I kept thinking of Loubo's commercial spot "He's younger and has some opinions... IIIIIII'm kind of the veteran guy"

Loubo would be an awesome voice for a cartoon character. He sounds like Fozzy Bear.

Does Loubo remind anybody else of Sidney Bernstein?

Loubo is nothing but hackneyed clichés. As Kent Wilson put it "a card carrying jock sniffer. Anything that challenges orthodoxy to him is nonsense."

With how both Nakladal and Wotherspoon are playing, I'm not sure I want either Wideman or Russell back in the lineup period.
I was expecting team would have to make do with those guys until legit replacements could be found in July. Who knew that they would play at a level that's actually greater than the two vets play thus far this season. My own eye test agrees with that and the fancy stats back it up and I seldom use the fancy stats for any argument.
With the defenders, the worst corsi #'s on the team belong to Russell with Wideman and Engelland being about the same and Smid less bad, but still negative. Hamilton is barely positive, which is impressive due to his playing with bad defensemen and Nakladal/Spoon/Gio/Brodie are all very much in the positive. The two new guys are being sheltered a bit, which is to be expected both in terms of zone starts and ice time, but they are starting to get used more without much problem. Nakladal was out in OT, and Spoon out on the PK. Didn't get scored on in either situation when they were out there.

They did a great job of shutting down Tavares for the most part and the Flames 1st line outshined the Isles'. I saw portions of each period but the stretches I did see it was pretty much all Flames. I must've missed the bits where the Isles put on some pressure because I have no idea when/how they racked up 30+ shots.
It's too bad that the Flames don't seem to get rewarded nearly as much this year. I guess it balances out. And when they have been able to find the net, the goaltending would capsize and it's a 5-4 loss instead.
It seems in theory, a goalie and a big scoring RW would take this team a long, long way. Fingers crossed that both are checked off by draft day.

Yeah this was different than the previous game, where Ortio kept them in it. In this game the Flames dominated, and especially so in OT. They were a Monahan post and a Brodie fan away from winning. The Isles had their moments all game but the Flames were better.

No Wideman, Russell, Smid, Hiller that counts as over $13 million in salary and this team has played back to back their best defensive efforts over the season against two quality opponents. Maybe a small sample size or coincidence but I'm willing to bet some of it has to do with the fact that the players out of the lineup aren't very good defensively and the goaltender can't make a clutch save. Please Brad get rid of all these guys.

The contrarian in me notes that they also won without Gaudreau, Monahan and Bouma (and Wideman).

Encouraging stuff from Ortio. I think it's just a matter of confidence for him.
He was very good in the AHL last year and was pretty good in his call up as well. You don't go from that to complete crap in one offseason.
