What is Pittsburgh waiting for?

Zatkoff is waiver eligible and they don't want to lose him? If their website is accurate they had one spot free.

You know, if you are looking for moves to criticize for our goaltender gap it is the trade of Brossoit for Smid then the trade of Berra later that same season. The loss of Brossoit is the gap player you should be complaining about, not the drafting of McDonald over Demko. Pick that one to pieces.

I think there are very few goaltending prospects in this league worth a 1st round draft pick, even lottery protected.
Just too much uncertainty.

You don't think Matt Murray is worth pick #14-30 in 2017? When this team desperately needs a goalie now and there's like a 40% chance that pick will be something in 3-5 years when Gaudreau is entering his late 20s?
If Pittsburgh accepts that, you run away laughing.

I was a fan of the Smid trade at the time. I think that was a Feaster deal. But trades and GM's get evaluated with hindsight and it would be handy to have Brossoit right now. Berra not so much - at 29 can't call him a prospect anymore.

I'm guessing they have interest in something the flames have and either brought up Murray or the flames have asked about him. A first rounder doesn't help the pens now and they're clearly in win now mode. If they weren't in win now mode, this wouldn't be news.
|
This. The only reason there would a deadline deal here is if the Penguins decide they need some veteran help this season. They come asking for Russell or Hudler and the Flames ask for Murray. Or the Flames try to generate interest in the UFAs and by the way we want Murray. Picks would only factor as a sweetener and there's no way the Flame's first is used as a sweetener.
Otherwise the Penguins can hold on, see how he pans out and still deal him in the summer.
Sometimes I think posters focus too much in the Flame's side and don't look at it from the other team's.

Agreed, who's worried about the Berra deal, I'd do that one over and over again. Berra would just be another addition to our inconsistent can't really trust him, are you a back up, starter or AHL goalie problem.

Right but if he's ultimately getting sent down, why wait?

The loss of Brossoit is the gap player that hurt, but it was also compounded by losing depth in the trade of Berra. I would have moved Berra, but I wasn't sure the Brossoit deal would work out long term. The depth issue has comeback to hurt us a bit.

This is all because Ortio fell flat on his face. If he's even just competent at this point, Brossoit's name would be all but forgotten.

The Pens aren't shopping Murray. It sounds like they're extremely high on him, and why wouldn't they be. THN has him on the World Cup Team North America roster:
Quote:
I spoke with Pittsburgh Penguins GM Jim Rutherford at length about Murray last week. Rutherford made it clear Murray was NHL ready but that it was good for him to keep getting reps at the AHL level, where he has one of the best statistical resumes in league history for his age. He isn’t a household name yet, but he’s a phenom in the making and deserves the No. 3 goalie job.
|
So if the Flames are genuinely interested, I'm assuming it's because they think he can be a legitimate number one, and sooner than Gillies. And for the record, when I speculated that the Flames 1st round pick might be a part of any deal, I didn't say they would trade it straight up for Murray. It's unlikely, but not impossible to imagine a swap of 1st round picks could be part of such a deal. And that such a deal would have to wait until after the draft lottery to determine what those picks are worth. It's hilarious how things get snatched up and distorted on this forum.

They don't want to lose him, they have space right now, rosters expand after the deadline, they want to look at Murray before making a decision.... They might be working a trade as you suggest but plenty of other reasons

You put forward a trade proposal that had very little thought put into it, some people disagreed and stated why. Odd thing to get upset over. Nothing was snatched up and it certainly wasn't distorted.
Okay sure, you're adding some 1st round swap idea, but the Penguins aren't in a huge position to do that considering they don't know the fate of their 1st round picks this season or next due to the Kessel trade.
Murray is equal to a guy like Gilles IMO, further ahead? Yeah probably, but only due to Jon being hurt this year. Anything involving the Flames first is a massive overpayment.

Agreed.
Until a goalie has proven he can start in the NHL for an extended period of time, he's not worth paying a huge price for.
The history of the NHL is littered with goalies who put up huge numbers as an AHL player or even a back-up, but who couldn't cut it as a #1.

The last AHL phenom in the making - Jacob Markstrom.
He's got good stats, but so does the other goalie who plays for them. I'm not going crazy for a guy who's proven nothing in the NHL.

Don't know about Murray, but Hellebuyck I would think long and hard about giving up this year's first. He's 22 and is better than Pavelec or Hutchinson. IMO the Jets are bush league for sending him back down.

This years first is a top 3 pick, man. Come on. Nobody's going to bat an eye if we trade a 1st round pick that used to belong to the Blackhawks for goaltending help. The Calgary Flames 1st round pick in 2016 is Brodie/Gaudreau untouchable.

That is ridiculous. Hellebuyck has been good, but not 6th overall good.

The pick is not likely to be top 3 at this point.
There are three huge favourites to finish last, second last and third last. They are Toronto, Edmonton and Columbus.
Of the tier of teams all grouped together above them, (Buffalo, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver) we have the second best points %, just behind Vancouver.
This roster is not bad enough for the top 3 pick you desire. Not without a lottery win.
