My basis is that he is sheltered in Nashville. Even with the vast majority of his starts in the offensive zone, he still only put up 25 points. A comparison would be a Dion Phaneuf, who scored 50+ points when he was sheltered, and it was only when he was thrust into a larger role that his deficiencies started to show.

Seth Jones still has a long ways to go. I feel that he hasn't proven enough to be a "top pairing defender", but more of a proven #3-4, nearly certain #2 with some seasoning, and a possible #1 sort of upside. We have no idea how well he will play when he is the number one guy playing the tough minutes.

Johansen plays the tough minutes and has produced. He's also a risk for a ton of reasons (attitude, poor performance this year etc.) but he has proven a lot more than Jones has at this point.

Well they got Carter by trading Voracek. Not driectly but they got Gaborik by trading Nash (imho that was a two part trade). So really they've traded Voracek, Nash and Johansen.

Nashville makes out like bandits on this one. I am not sold on Seth Jones at all. He logs a lot of minutes and shows nothing offensively to me that says he will be a top end D man.
I see him topping out as a solid 3-4 guy who can net 30 points off the blueline. On the other hand I think RJ now that he has gotten out of where he didn't want to be will be a consistent 40 goal C.

I don't mean to nitpick, but Peter Forsberg once played in Nashville.

So why are so many Portland Winterhawks being traded?

Off the top of my head:

Johansen
Jones
Baertschi
Neidereiter
Leipsic

just in the last 2 or 3 years. And I believe there have been others.

On the same basis what others have already stated. Columbus paid a hefty price for a sexy name who may or may not live up to the hype. Nashville just received a bonified young 1st line centre who has already put up a 71 point season. Huge win for Nashville Imo.

Yes, I was pretty much going to say this. Columbus addressed a weakness by acquiring the other top pairing d-man they need long term, but they lost a #1 center who are also hard to find. They essentially just created a new hole to fill, but I'm betting they tank hard the rest of the year for Matthews.

Nashville could afford to lose Jones since they already had Weber and Josi, but didn't have a true top line center. Relying on Mike Ribeiro will only get you so far. Mike Fisher is a better 3rd line guy than 2nd line guy at this point in his career.

With the Preds good track record of picking up and fixing reclamation projects, even if there are attitude issues, Johansen is probably not that much of a risk in their eyes.

Basically the Predators might have just made the move that pushes them over the top.

The fact that Edmonton didn't get Seth Jones makes me really happy. It's always a good day when the Oilers and thier fans are on the side lines wondering why they didn't take our offer.

I like hockey deals like this as it appears both sides have won and got the player they wanted.

You make it out as if Seth Jones is some unproven player. He's a stud young defenseman. He fetched way more in a trade than Dougie Hamilton did, that should give you an indication of his league wide value.

Yep. Two defensemen have moved that would have fit their needs perfectly (Hamilton and Jones) and they got neither. It's great!

He's bitter that that the Oilers didn't get him and now he is convincing himself that Jones is garbage to compensate.

Not bitter in the least and I don't think Jones is garbage at all. I like Johansen a lot and feel that Columbus paid a big price for a young defensemen who has a long ways to go before coming a top pairing option. I do appreciate you telling me how I feel though you truly are a hero.

Considering they're probably throwing in the towel this screams of an investment in some lottery tickets for Matthews though.

I think Nashville might have done Draisaitl for Jones straight up as a bold move, but Johansen makes much more sense in the fact that he's arrived and able to pitch in now which is where the Preds are at from the looks of it. Whatever the case I'm glad Jones was available and the Oil didn't get him cos that would be a move they need to make.

I like the trade for Columbus. They got a stud defenseman in this deal and I think this kid is still improving and not even in his peak. Johanssen on the other hand gave Nashville the first line centre they've been looking for but I am not sure if He can repeat his performance the last few seasons. I might give Columbus a slight edge on this trade.
