But who run Starbucks or big corporations in America and make these decisions? Most of them are middle aged WASP which makes this "Christmas is offensive" politically correct movement ironic.

Pretty soon, you'll hear people saying Merry Christmas in China & India more often than you'll in North America.
It is? We have one thread here about Christmas decorations being put out too early and you're still going to try to make that claim with a straight face?

It is? The only time I hear about a controversy is when someone says Happy Holidays and a Christian loses their cool over it.

I doubt it, I don't have that kind of superpowered hearing.

People love to bitch about how they're no longer allowed to say Merry Christmas even though that is completely untrue. Yes, stores have policies that ask their employees say Happy Holidays, can you blame them? Why try and alienate potential customers?

But besides those working in Retail, is there some sort of "Christmas Salutation Police" going around that I am unaware of? I have never once in my entire life actually heard of anyone facing any sort of backlash or negative consequences for saying Merry Christmas and the only time it seems to ever be brought up is by Christians pretending that their "rights" are being marginalized.

People bitch about not being able to say Merry Christmas more often than they actually say Merry Christmas.

One thing to remember is that Christmas is a purely secular holiday as currently practised.

Santa, an orgy of consumerism, and a few days off from work. Jesus Christmas doesn't really exist. So Merry Christmas is the correct greeting for the season. It's the celebration of consumerism in a country based on judeochristan roots that are slowly fading.

So I wish we'd embrace the secular holiday and encourage its celebration amoung everyone in our country

I am making this claim when in downtown Calgary nowadays you can only hear happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas.

Strangely, people don't seem to mind saying Happy Easter however.

Best thing about Christmas. Trolling the people you know who are sensitive on this issue with "merry x-mas" or "happy holidays"

It probably because you're walking through the mall or in and out of stores?

How about everyone stops caring about anything even remotely similar to the decorations on a cup, regardless of whether they have some religious connotation or not... Same goes with store greetings and absolutely everything else so trivial and cosmetic.

If that's the case, why don't we just cancel Christmas or the December 25th holiday altogether. Just add that day and make it a longer new year instead for family gathering.

I am not saying you have to go to mass on Dec. 24 midnight and if you want to go to ski trip or the beach on Dec. 25, that's totally fine. But just call Dec. 25 what it is, Christmas day.

People say Merry Christmas all the time around Christmas, and no one cares. Its a complete non-issue. People say happy holidays because its Christmas and Boxing Day and then right after that New Years...you know more than one holiday.

Because cultural institutions are important. I think everyone should be a merry Christmas person. Not saying merry Christmas is like saying happy holidays on Canada Day. Both are secular holidays celebrated in Canada

People (like me) use Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas interchangeably. Do people really get all offended if one gets used over the other? Seems like such a silly thing to get worked up over. I'm sorry if I offend you folks when I wish you a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holiday (whichever camp you're on). To me, they're both the same.

It's not secular though...

Just because some people are treating it that way, doesn't mean it is for everyone. Also, while all of our other secular holidays have roots in historical events that are not tied to religion, the roots here are clearly religious. Many of the customs are derived from pre-existing Celtic and Roman religions, but that doesn't make them any less Christian, as Christian customs are largely a mix of Celtic, Roman, and Jewish religious traditions to begin with.

What the heck is so damn offensive about it?

I'm not Jewish, but if someone said Happy Hanukkah (or any other Jewish holiday for that matter) to me, I would be happy and I would accept the greeting for what it is.

Sheesh, some people.

I just don't get it either. If someone says Happy Holidays I say the same in return, same if they say Merry Christmas..

Mind you in Iceland its easy now, everyone say Happy Yule, no Christ in the word to worry about anyone getting upset about.

Seth did a terrific video about all this nonsense and how misunderstood this holiday is, like the fact most Christians don't know X-Mas is not something secularists did to piss them off, but was what Christians called Christmas.

The problem is all of those looking to play the victim card for no reason.
There is no war against Christmas, and on the flipside its not the end of the world to use the word Christmas if you're not Christian.

People are so stupid, its unreal. Just grow up and it won't be an issue.
