I'm no theologian, and I'm not a catholic, but my understanding is that Benedict was the rightmost of all the candidates being considered for the job. There might not be a difference of policy, but it's hard to imagine JPII hectoring Canada for our liberal social policies, isn't it? I find it hard, anyway.

You raise an interesting point, though. If the pope gets his inspiration from God--then why is god more conservative when Benedict is pope than he was when JPII was? Food for thought, anyway.

The church is an antiquated organization that is no closer to god (perhaps evern farther away) than the whore walking along 17th Ave NE.

Benedict -- on the second day of a visit to his native Bavaria-- said that spreading the word of Jesus Christ was more important than all the emergency and development aid that rich churches like those in Germany gave to poor countries.

I could not disagree more with him.

Well lets face it Bobble...the more the word is spread the more money that goes into the Catholic coffers. So as opposed to actually spending their coin to help their people...or "heaven forbid<sic>" change their antiquated dogma to allow the use of condoms, they have larger gold reserves for the big fight against the anti-christ.

Sad but true.

Catholic Church is one messed up organization. Sure doesn't mean they represent ALL of religion though.
