The PBP guy on the station I watched was pretty adamant that Ryan should not even be getting a penalty.

I agreed with Galley, at full speed Frolik launched Ryan into the net. Not sure how much avoidance he could have done between getting shoved and the actual time of impact. Ryan was already in full stop motion before Frolik even made the shove. It's a problem with super slow mo. It takes away the actual speed at which an incident happened and lets people makes judgements based on the speed of the replay.

Why would Ryan do that? The opposition wants Hiller in net.

.861 Sv% this year for a career .916 Sv% goalie.
Are we 100% sure he wasn't injured before this play? Very un-Hiller-like numbers. Maybe the injury was there and he aggravated it on the collision? I thought for sure it was a head/shoulder injury the way he took the impact. Didn't expect a lower body injury at all.

" Red Light Racicot" and "Red Light Wregget" (remember him, guys?) were classics. So, in terms of history, I do think it's quite a good nickname.

If you look at the slow motion replay he was putting on the breaks after being pushed and then dives shoulder first at the goaltender. Not exactly sure what Ryan was thinking but that's charging into the goaltender. The official was right there in perfect view when he called the penalty and he clearly saw a player launching himself into the goaltender. Players are supposed to try and avoid contact and Ryan did no such thing. Easy call.

Boomer on the Fan saying the Flames have the worst goaltending in the NHL.
Can't say I disagree.

Save percentage is the second worst in the league at .871, Columbus the only worse team at at .858.
It hasn't been good at all, and has been letting in killer softies.

I'm never happy to see a player injured but is it ok to say that I'm happy he won't be in net for the Flames?

While I don't think Ryan made 100% full effort to stop, Frolik did push him and that contributed to the collision. Reverse the roles and everyone here would be screaming about how a Sens player shoved the player into the goalie. Not a single person here would argue otherwise. Sorry but I agree with Galley on this one. Luckily for the Flames, they finally got a PP goal.

Isn't this the rule though? The player needs to do everything in his power to avoid hitting the goalie. Not just fold when he sees that he can no longer score.

The player also has to worry about his own safety. I'm sure Ryan could have done something more to get out of the way but maybe he thought he'd injure himself by doing so. Either way, he didn't really "run" the goalie as he was trying to stop. It's a crappy play but it does happen a lot and if roles were reversed we'd be saying it was all the defenders fault for pushing him.

Yeah he definitely broke his fall on Hiller, I'll give you that. I still feel like he didn't need to follow through with the shoulder to the head. But the game is played fast and I don't think Ryan had any malicious intent.
I do think it's ridiculous that the PBP was so adamant it should be a penalty. It's definitely not suspension worthy, but Ryan was the second player in and driving harder to the net then he needed to be in that situation.

The season is figuratively, hanging on a string. The Flames have received horrible goaltending to date, and although far from the only reason for their record, you have to believe any drastic turnaround will require at least above average goaltending.
It would appear we will now need to count on a guy whose has shown potential, but also the propensity for great inconsistency. As has been pointed out, it probably can't be worse than what we've gotten so far. But it's going to need to be a lot better.
I feel the stakes are pretty high so I do wonder if BT looks for a veteran option.
What a mess.

No pushback at all again. What is the point of having Bollig on this team? Nobody even went out to lay a body of Ryan. I don't care if he was 'pushed in' you need to make guys think twice about getting so close to your goalie.

Ryan was also in discomfort, and laying on the ice. Jumping on top of a guy who is laying on your goalie won't be helpful.
It's Bobby Ryan, it's not like he is going to fight anyone so if you run after him all you're going to do is take a penalty on him while he turtles.

And the result is no pp, no offensive zone faceoff and no goal 12 seconds later.

Does Hiller have the worst goalie stats in the NHL this year?
