I heard through my buddy's buddy that you can just log in "from spain", pay for it, and then watch it as normal from here.

I had your mindset and now I'm wondering if I should have just sucked it up. I picked up unblock.us and signed up for international GameCentre for $114 ($150 after conversion – thanks Harper). Unblock-us is going to run me $50 for the year, so technically I end up paying $200 anyways. Yes, I do now have access to American Netflix, but there's also an element of hassle. As CroFlames mentioned the Playstation app required some fiddling – I had to get an American PSN account to download the American version of the app. Getting my Roku devices to switch to American was a bit of a chore also. At this point I probably should have just bit the bullet and paid the $200.

I'm confused. Do we still need a DNS service to get around blackouts?

Or are there no blackouts on the Rogers Gamecenter service this year?

I believe the blackout fear has lifted. Nobody had issue seeing the first games. I'm kicking myself a little for jumping the gun.

In the USA, the blackouts are definitely being used for Game Center. Any national broadcast is blacked out, and local games (Kings & Ducks in my case) are also blacked out.

I thought about using my Canadian PSN profile, but then I remembered you HAVE to use Rogers log in credentials, and it's just a vicious cirlce

Why can't I just turn on my TV and watch any hockey game I want without hassle I ask? (PS: Must be in HD)

The $50 difference wasn't worth the hassle for me this time around, just paid the extra $30 difference for the 'early bird special'. We'll see how it goes next year.

I think the blackouts are still in effect for regional broadcasts. Our home opener was being broadcasted nation-wide, and since Sportsnet owns the national broadcasting rights, they lift the blackouts on GCL for national games.

I read something about lifting regional blackouts if you're a customer of a participating TV provider though. I think it just had Rogers, Videotron, and Telus Optik on the list though.

I paid early bird pricing for GCL, so it was 189 with tax. I'm not sure I care what it costs in the states; the entertainment value I get out of that 189 dollars is worth it to me so I'll cough up.

I just HATE that I have to go through Rogers to do it.

So far so good with Gamecenter, quality has been decent, with the odd picture drop or skip, but since I remember the TV occasionally going all pixelated and the audio being out of sync all the time over cable last year, I think it is about even so far.

If you have a Rogers phone, I would suggest trying to sign up and see if you get it fro free - I know of two people, including myself, who just have basic Rogers plans and still got Gamecenter at $0.

My beef now is I can't get signed in to the mobile app on my phone with my NHL username. You need to have a Rogers Gamecentre account...which of course I don't.

Is there a way to download the American NHL app from the Google play store?

I'm now dealing with these hassles because I too didn't want to risk blackouts through Rogers. Cutting the cord can be a real pain in the ass sometimes.

You could try to download the app here. I think if this works it will be the US one. You may still need a proxy to be able to use it on mobile.

I had to setup a US iTunes account to download the non-Rogers Game Center app. Works fine now, but it was certainly a pain-- screw you Rogers! I would have gladly paid Rogers for Game Center if it weren't for the blackouts.

What exactly is that? I opened that link and then started getting redirected to dodgy websites. Not so sure I like how that started out.

I'm currently watching the Van vs Ducks game on GC that should be blacked out but it's not.

I'm not sure what that means. The other day the Ducks game was blacked out for me.

Odd.

Games 1 and 2 worked like a charm up here in Edmonton. Game 3 not so much.

I'm wondering if Rogers considers this the first "regional game".

Sorry, just going to vent a little here:

Signed up for GC yesterday morning as my usual source for hockey is having issues with billing and my account had expired. I decided to go with one month - see how it worked, see if the blackouts would be a problem, etc.

Checked my email this morning to see I had been signed up for an auto-renewing account. This, I did not want. Searched the site all over for how to cancel auto-renewal to no avail. Live chatted with someone who told me I was in fact not signed up for auto renewal. I said - are you sure? My email says otherwise and here is my confirmation number. She continued to dig deeper to realize I was in fact going to be billed again next month. Nice try Rogers.

I asked to have it cancel in one month so I can re-evaluate. No problem she said. I asked if there was a way to cancel myself online in case I sign up again? Nope - gotta contact them. Great - way to make it easy.

Logged in tonight. Blacked out. Awesome. Tried a VPN - worked for a minute before stopping the feed and telling me I needed Flash. I've got Flash and it's up to date. Went back to the games page - now when I click any game I get directed to a screen that tells me I'm logged out. Log back in - apparently I have no services associated with my account.

I swore I'd never give Rogers another dime in 2006. 24 hours after going back on that I'm left pissed off again. ###### me, right?

*edit* Just to vent a little more, instead of cancelling my auto-renewal as requested, they outright cancelled my service. So now I have to re-buy it all over again and then contact customer 'service' again to cancel auto-renewal. Rogers can suck the big one.

I signed into GCL, and tonight's game against STL is blacked out.

Perhaps all this running around with the VPN will ultimately be worth it if the blackouts are going to be a problem.

Yeah it said tonights Oilers game would be blacked out for me as well, until I put the un-block stuff back on. Now at least it appears like I'll be able to watch.
