The NHL isn't in the business of investigating crime allegations.

I don't get why her name would be trashed, especially if he's found guilty. I think the kind of people that would "trash" a victim are the kind of people you don't need to worry about. I know I'd want to see it through for a few reasons, the main one being that a criminal is punished for his crime.
But I guess most people knew this was going to happen. If you're a famous athlete with lots of money, you can do whatever you want as long as you can pay for it to go away. I really hope more hockey players don't start acting like this, it's one of the main reasons I don't like the NBA or NFL. It's really hard to respect some of those guys.

Exactly. Why would her name be trashed? If anything is going to trash her name I'd figure it would be taking a big bag of cash and letting a rapist walk away. Would you take money and let a murderer off? Would you even feel comfortable taking money from a murderer? Sorry but I find that very strange.
And I don't think Kane should be vilified for paying for it to go away. IF it was a false accusation I'd want it to go to trial and hope she never saw a cent but from Kane's perspective I could understand not wanting to take that risk. Rape is such a sensitive topic and Kane doesn't have the greatest reputation. He just has way too much to lose. A payout makes most sense for him.

Good question. Maybe you can answer it, since you were trashing this woman's name when this story first came out.

I have no idea what Julia Robert's marriage or FAT Lisa Marie have to do with anything, were they next on Kobe's list? And was he taking notes from the CSI star?

If there is a settlement in this case, I can't imagine that it wouldn't involve a "drop of charges" or else what's the point of settling (if you are Kane).
|
Yup. I'm sure.
Yes, she could recant. But she'd commit perjury and/or risk a false accusation charge herself. They could treat her as hostile and put previous statements to her. Check out the Voynov case. The wife didn't want to proceed.

I'd accept an admission that she made a false accusation or a finding that it was false (as opposed to insufficient evidence).
The biggest example I can think of was a big name soccer player who was falsely accused. It turned out she was under delusions of a personal relationship. There was no payday in that case.
What doesn't do it for me is a dropped case by the prosecution because the complainant decides she doesn't want to continue. Especially if there's been a civil settlement.

After this comment...
I wonder how he'll be accepted by fans around the league and other players for that matter. I mean even if he pays for it to go away, it'll only go away in the eyes of the law, not in the eyes of society. I can't see this going well for hockey in general.

Hackey, the victim was trashed in the Tyson case, the Kobe case, the Steubenville case, the Jerramy Stevens case, etc.

This way the case ends, you get some justice and the world is at least warned about Kane. So I can understand taking the easy way out

Maybe it's just me, but I think I'd be happier with a healthy settlement I could live off for the rest of my life than having the wrongdoer spend time in jail if I could only have one. Obviously, both is better.

Hope your trial prep is going well!
As for the above opinion - it involves economic loss (welfare fraud) which could be potentially resolved through restitution, ignoring any denunciation or deterrence principles.
I personally think it would be a stretch to apply that opinion to circumstances involving physical injury/bodily harm. Will be interesting to see how this sorts out.

@news4buffalo: Just in: A News 4 source confirms both sides of the Pat Kane rape investigation have sat down for settlement talks, however are far apart.

I really hope they don't settle but if they do, I hope she gets north of 10 mil from him.
