Not true, Vancouver had an "outdoor" game at BC Place in 2014.

A new stadium has to be able to do more than just be a stadium, to make any financial sense, which pretty much forces the facility to have a roof.
There are many options to make the fan experience a good one, whether the roof is retractable, or has large glass panels, etc. I'm assuming that noone is going to build giant bunkers like they did in the past.

Much more than a hockey arena.
I liked hearing about the green spaces, pedestrian friendly areas, walkways and living/working areas.
They are building a self sufficient community with a sports complex as its anchor and I love it.
KK started off by talking about the new Library and the Juno Awards, perfect metaphor. All is good for Calgary.

Part of me agrees, but the part that likes watching sports outside on lovely days/nights disagrees.
A retractable roof would have been lovely.

As it is bands often go Vancouver, Edmonton/Calgary and then Winnipeg for a Western Canadian swing. It's not suddenly becoming Vancouver and Edmonton and Calgary and Winnipeg. The roof is not a cure all to getting more concerts here. Will it mean a few more shows skip Edmonton for Calgary? Yes, but shows will still skip Calgary for Edmonton.
That's my point, if people think that's going to stop with a new arena, they are in for some heartbreak. Big acts will still skip Calgary.

Flames can't survive long term without a new building
Saddledome can't survive as it is without the Flames
Sure right now most concerts still come here but without the Flames how does the dome operate?

Imagine an in demand profession that has several equally attractive offers on the table to bring their talents to organizations in various "world class" cities (ie New York, Paris, London, ect..) If they havent heard of Calgary or what it offers they are most likely going to skip out on Calgary and go with one of the more established cities. This is about putting Calgary on the top of lists for people to come here.
|
This argument has been used at length by every city who wants to be bigger, and it never works. How do we compete with New York, Paris, London? are you kidding? we can't. We dont have the people, tax revenue, history, etc. When i think of these places i dont think about the arenas, I think about the culture, the working conditions, the living conditions etc. Bike lanes, public parks, weather, night life. None of this is added to the city by simply building a new arena or any building for that matter.
What makes a city world class? Do world class cities actually attract the most talented people?
What makes regional cities great? why is Portland or Austin, or San Fran so popular?

LOL. He's also been saying an arena announcement is close for the past 8 years.

I'm not sure I agree with this, as the City ask is precisely the money the City has allocated to the Fieldhouse.

Just a quick Google search shows that even the mighty NFL only currently has 4 stadiums with retractable roofs and apparently 66% of the games in those stadiums are with the roof closed (because it is to hot but same would go for to cold here)
Economically it doesn't make sense to have a retractable roof and therefore you go back to my original point

Always take no roof. In fact, CFL and any other field sport are not big enough to justify a new indoor facility. Build a cheaper open air facility, renovate McMahon OR.... if you are going to spend 100s of millions on a state of the art football stadium, then a retractable roof is absolutely necessary in this city.
Lots of NFL stadiums are open air, even in December they rock in NY, Chi, Buff and Seattle in rain. I would take Ralph Wilson stadium over closed SkyDome anytime.

No comments if large scale concerts could be held in the stadium/fieldhouse.

i wonder if anyone in the flames organizations is hearing a voice that is saying things like Ease his pain, go the distance, build it and they will come
anywyas, i guess everything (location, funding, cost etc) is pretty much as expected.
personally i am not really in favour of the government getting involved in funding these type of projects but i do understand that there is some overall value in having these things here. will be interesting to see how long it takes to get digging.
how much will the streets need to be widened to accomodate all of teh tourists that will come to see this structure?
