I would have no issues whatsoever with the Flames taking Merkley, but I think it'd be a bit of a change in their drafting philosophy for the last two drafts.

Konecny has everything going for him got a 3 in skating. But that can be taught.

In the Top Prospect game, Konecny was blowing past people. I don't see how you can give him a 3 in skating. Very odd.

I've only watched one highlight package of his but the skating was the first thing I noticed but what the hell do I know?

I think I might be pretty disappointed if Merkley is the pick. Smallish winger that thinks pass first? The Flames need size and guys that can finish. Hoping for SvechnikovorBittner in the middle of the first round. Big guys that can finish.

If the Flames go Merkley, I'd rather they trade down and take Boeser and pick up a 2nd.

If the Flames like Merkley and think he's good value at 15, I'm not sure why we wouldn't stay put and take him as BPA.

He and Bittner are my 2 least favourite of the forwards expected to go from 14-24, so I would rather they go in a different direction even though he's a decent player.

It really doesn't matter much who they take of Svechnikov, Konecny, Connor, White, Eriksson Ek, Merkley or Boeser. All of those guys are very good players.

I wondered that for a long time and then read what all the other scouts had to say about his skating and watched videos and then came to the conclusion that that 3/5 rating is rubbish. Everyone but Button raves about Konecny's skating.

lol...no doubt.

So what did everyone else think if these were our selections in first 3 rnds:

- Calgary 15 Meier, Timo 6'1 RW
Swiss Army Knife: Good size, strong, responsible winger with excellent puck skills
- Calgary 45 Carlsson, Gabriel 6'4 D
Smart shutdown defenseman with tremendous frame; keeps the game simple
- Calgary 52 Dergachyov, Alexander 6'4 C
A Russian Lawson Crouse (stick tap to Eldon MacDonald) and can score
- Calgary 53 Vande Sompel, Mitchell 5'10 D
Versatile special teams demon; PPQB and can play forward on the PK; undersized, visionary, creative offensive catalyst.
- Calgary 76 Nättinen, Julius 6'2 C
The Solid One - Solid size, solid skills - skating, playmaking, vision. (E-Mac)
- Calgary 83 Gilbert, Dennis 6'2 D
Rock steady blueliner is highly competitive and composed, possessing very good hockey sense

Meier and Connor will be gone. Yet you think Merkley and Konecky have less bust potential than Svechnikov? I think the complete opposite. Svechnikov is skilled but has true NHL size. He is the safe pick!

When we call a 5 ' 8" 170 pound guy a safe pick as a first rounder? Not bad mouthing Konecky just stating facts. Drafting a guy that size in any round is a big risk. In the first round its borderline stupid. Not saying your stupid, or the Flames if they pick him.

You would have to really love Konecky and think he is twice the player the others are to take that risk. He is definitely not the safe pick! Same can be said for Merkley!

Not saying I would be disappointed with any player really! I can not tell the future. Guys that size though are hard pressed to become NHLers. We got lucky with Gaudreau, lets not forget he was a fourth round pick.

I just don't see Calgary picking either of those players based off Burke Treliving and Hartley. If we want those guys we should seriously consider trading down in the draft. Pick up another asset to lessen the gambe we would be taking.

Konecny seems like a very intriguing player, but anytime a junior player goes into the draft with at least one concussion on his resume it scares the heck out of me. Feel a lot better if he was gone before the Flames pick.

I like it. That adds size and skill at needed positions. Good job.

I wouldn't worry about it. A guy with no concussion history can get concussed in his first practise. Can't do a whole lot about it and hope your players keep their heads up.

Thats a fantastic 3 rounds IMO. I'm very intrigued by Nattinen. Dergachyov is a massive win. Only guy I don't know about is Gilbert.

White seems like a RH Curtis Glencross. Which isn't bad given the fact that Glencross used to be the hardest working player once upon a time.

If the Flames can somehow nab Meier it's a huge win, the rest is just gravy.

This draft is crazy......so many good players available at 15, so many possibilities leading up to the pick. It's going to be a crazy draft day, can't wait.
