northeast Calgary residents pave entire front lawns

^ that's my situation. My neighbor and I put sod on one side instead of gravel. My walk makes the turn around the garage though and I would like it to go straight down, just for the little bit of extra space. I don't plan on parking any broken down cars or whatever there.

In truth, I would like to get rid of the lawn out front and go with some kind of rock garden or something that would require less water. I just haven't seen anything that I like the look of I guess, so I am sticking with the lawn I guess.

I have no fence on either side, and we love it. Neighbors wander over and chat in the yard, pop up the deck to visit, our kids will go over and visit at their place. Why do I need barriers breaking up the most local of my community?

With the buildings being that close together I imagine that everyone's balcony doors need to be locked to prevent Ninjas from scaling up between two buildings and staging high rise home invasions from the balconies.

Maybe better convenience in terms of proximity and transportation, but not a better lifestyle. Don't think you can beat Canada. I prefer having ample space. The last thing I want is some random mouth breather breathing down my neck because all the houses are a few CM away from each other and every square inch is crawling with people.

Getting off topic from the original post, but anyway...

I'd say both countries have their pros/cons; when I'm here I miss Canada, when I am in Canada I miss Japan. What I like about Japan: Japan is more polite, cleaner, safer and has more culture (that may seem hard to believe, and it's hard to explain; you'd have to visit so I can give you a short walking tour, then you'd get it ) Plus the transportation standards and cheap flights (tons of airlines, lots of competition; costs roughly $60 one way from Fukuoka to Tokyo which is a 2 hr flight) adds to the awesomeness.

Edit: It's also cheaper for things like food/beer, going out (no tipping required). Plus, another big one for me... Washlets.... trust me, once you tried one; got used to one... you'd never want to go without one:
