I think it wasnt a part of the game slash. He clearly turns his hands and changes his grip.

Good hits vs. bad hits are at least split second / matter of inches kind of things. That slash was just stupid.
McSorley on Brashear wasn't a terribly hard slash either...

Curious if a pro athlete misses games for a bone bruise. Could be all that it is but I know that feels terrible too.

I dunno, I think they should have don't it regardless. What if his arm is broken and he does damage to a ligament playing like that?

Naw, slashes of that "viciousness" happen all the time. When I hear two handed slash, I think baseball swing or legit overhead chop. Not just simply having two hands on the stick when you slash someone.
The landing spot is bad, and it's definitely a penalty, but lets not act like this is uncommon.

This did look like a really bad and deliberate slash, so the refs absolutely acted in accordance with the rule 61.4:
Quote:
Rule 61 – Slashing
61.1 Slashing - Slashing is the act of a player swinging his stick at an
opponent, whether contact is made or not. Non-aggressive stick contact to the pant or front of the shin pads, should not be penalized as slashing. Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an opponent’s body, the opponent’s stick, or on or near the opponent’s hands that, in the judgment of the Referee, is not an attempt to play the puck, shall be penalized as slashing.
- 61.2 Minor Penalty - A minor penalty, at the discretion of the Referee based on the severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player who slashes an opponent.
- 61.3 Major Penalty - A major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee based on the severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player who slashes an opponent. When injury occurs, a major penalty must be assessed under this rule (see 61.5).
- 61.4 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent by slashing.
|
As for Subban being "targeted" I don't buy it. He is a superstar player and he is viewed by the league/refs as such. I do find him obnoxious though, not that it matters in this case.

It's a vicious slash but like you say we see this a lot just as we do vicious cross checks that only get two minutes. I got no problem with giving him a double minor but removing him from the game changes the balance of the contest.
BTW Stone doesn't look in pain on the bench at all right now. This is looking pretty suspicious with all the speculation.

Can we all agree that Subban was really incredibly stupid to put the refs in the position to make that call?

For no particular reason, tt just occurred to me that Subban and Phaneuf together would form the most intolerable defensive pairing in NHL.
