Ortio assigned to Adirondack.

Ortio officially reassigned to AHL. Had to go down after Gillies signing. Was up on emergency recall. #Flames

Not really - Under the CBA Gillies can't be assigned to the AHL and Ortio can, so he is the one who has to go.
He'll be back up Sunday with the other Black Aces, once the baby flames season is over. With Ramo healthy, Ortio knows he's #3 on the depth chart for this run, so no big deal to go down for a few days.

Yeah he and a bunch of Adirondack players can/will be recalled after Sunday's game.
At that point there is no limit for Calgary to call them up.

Stupid question time: Since this is the post season and players don't get paid extra for it (ie" they are now working for 'free') - Is there any reason not to call up your entire AHL squad as black aces, other than hotel/travel/etc considerations?

Yes theoretically you could/should call up the entire AHL squad, but the logistics get in the way.
Another consideration is coaches time. Does Hartley and staff really have the time to run essentially two teams worth of practice and still properly prepare 20 guys for a game?

I had thought mainly 'call them up but don't' dress or practice', just be around the team / atmosphere and, if needed, could dress..Seems like win/win and doesn't use up coaches time.
But you're right, likely a point where calling up your AHL 4th liner is of limited value...

Call up the coaching staff as well to assist. .
I know to many bodies is not helpful either...

Plus its the playoffs, you've got to keep the guys that got you there tight and together.

Hopefully he can get a couple of games in Adirondack so he's ready to go next week if he's needed.

The AHL squad has the following players on NHL Contracts that could be called up:
Ortio (no-brainer black ace)
Bill Arnold (Probably a black ace)
Emile Poirier (Probably a black ace)
and then probably four or five of these six
Cundari
Ramage
Wolf
Agostino
Reinhart
Elson
and then maybe none or both of these:
Kulak (Possibly a black ace, but a long shot)
McGrattan (Probably gets flown up anyways)
and then I doubt any of these get the callup:
Hanowski
Thiessen (probably not a black ace as the 5th string goaltender)
Sieloff (probably not a black ace with his inexperience)
Culkin (injured)
BVB
Acolatse

I would imagine the same reason teams trim down their roster as training camp progresses.... you aren't really fighting for your "23-man team" (or 30-man team) when there is a winnebago full of touriests along for the ride.

He didn't have to go down because of the Gillies signing. He had to go down because Ramo is healthy and he was on an emergency recall.
If Ramo was still hurt, they likely would have delayed announcing the Gillies signing until Sunday so Ortio could have stayed up.
