With this much money on the line for the BBC, they must felt they reeeeeeally had to can him based on his behaviour. Too bad it ended like this, it'll never be the same if they decide to go on. I wonder if Hammond and Captain Slow decide to stay on (my guess is yes).
Realistically speaking, Clarkson will only be out of work for as long as he wants to be.
The real question is May and Hammond because the ball is really in their court now because their contracts are up for renegotiation.
The BBC has this hilarious and naively corporate way of thinking along the lines of: 'we own the format and we own Top Gear and thats all that matters and Top Gear will go on and we'll just shuffle whatever pawns we want out there and it'll be good enough.'
And thats just not true, they seem adamant to continue Top Gear without Clarkson which is a challenging proposition on its own but now with May and Hammond out of contract those two are really wielding the hammer.
They might be able to keep a vastly less profitable Top Gear running without Clarkson, but not without Clarkson and one or both of Hammond and May.
So those two have a couple of options:
1. Tell the BBC where they can shove it and follow Clarkson wherever hes going.
2. Extort the hell out of the BBC during contract negotiations and get paid royally.
And if I'm Clarkson and I start my own show on another network the first person I hire is Oison Tymon.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
A third scenario could be that they sell the Top Gear brand, format, etc. to another network for a huge price tag. But if the three hosts depart as a package and start something new, I don't think that too many people would care what it is called - they'd watch because of the hosts. Meanwhile, the Top Gear brand would probably just fizzle unless they really nailed the new hire/hires.

They paid £14M for that. I doubt anyone is going to buy it without the assets that made it valuable in the first place and if another network already has the assets that made it valuable in the first place why would they care about the format?

That's what I mean. If the hosts went to ITV or something, ITV might want to also purchase the brand as well just because it is so well established. The hosts plus the name would be a slam dunk. But I agree - whatever name or form a new show might take, viewers would follow the hosts and not the name/brand of the show.
As you mentioned earlier, the ball is really in the court of May and Hammond now. Their contract negotiations just changed dramatically.
Good to hear James basically say it's a package deal
I really would like the netflix thing to be real. Would keep sponsors out like the bbc does and gives them more freedom I would think for specials and the like
Yeah...because losing your cool and splitting a guy's lip in the heat of the moment is exactly the same as sexual harassment and rape.
It was a pattern of incidents in both cases, and apologist fans came out of the woodwork both times.
I guess beating up subordinates is A-OK for some people, I guess missed the HR meeting on that. Jeremy was warned he was on his last strike, and he ignored his warning by going off the deep end. I can't believe people are defending this turd just because he's entertaining on TV.

What pattern of incidents? As far as I understand hes never hit another employee before.
I'll say the same thing to you that I said earlier in the thread: havent you ever had a bad day?
What he did was wrong, he has to be punished for it. But he went to the guy and apologized and he apologized to his employer. He deserves discipline for his actions. I think these measures were extreme.
At the end of the day the BBC is doing their health and safety corporate BS.
He knew what he did was wrong. He apologized, the producer accepted his apology and by all accounts didnt want this to happen. Hey if Top Gear goes down that producer probably loses his job too.

There's no place in the western world where a company can keep on a senior employee who punches out an underling, there's no other suitable response for it, the police are considering assault charges. It is in no way minor.
I really enjoyed watching the three together on Top Gear and Jeremy was really a critical and highly entertaining factor on that show. That being said, I fully believe that Hammond and May can easily carry the show on their own if they so chose. With Jeremy no longer in the picture it also opens up the door for adding some one new and preferably a hot chick. Sex sells.
Top Gear just basically died and a ton of other networks are just rubbing their hands together in anticipation.
The BBC just cut off their nose to spite their face.
Is top gear America the same production?
If not the they should snag him fast
