				Dance Music...

yeah yeah, I know I know, yet another music thread

but here's the twist this time

I want to make a CD of dance music, with the stipulation - no hip hop/rap, preferably no techno either.

I can't understand why society says the only music you're allowed to dance to has to be hip hop or rap. I guess it's just the bar culture of today.

Don't get me wrong I like some songs in those genres, but I like a variety.

That said I'm trying to make a (second) CD of songs that you can dance to that aren't hip hop/rap/techno.

What songs would you reccomend?

edit: no bubblegum pop either, yes you can dance to Britney but... why?

You like house? What do you mean "dance" music? When I read dance, I thought of electronica (ie. house, trance, hard house, etc.)

I'm an avid lister of BPM (Channel 81 on XM Radio).

Here are a few new songs I've added to my iPod:

Alive - Da Buzz
Satellites - September
Under you Spell - Sin City Special
Take Me Where You Are - Fiori
Fire - Ferry Corsten (great sample feature Duran Duran's Simon LeBon)
Waiting for You - Narcotic Thrust
Waiting - Taxi Doll
One Night in Bangkok - Vinylshakerz (good re-make of the 80s hit)

I hope some of those selections work for you. I'm not sure if this is the kind of music you're looking for, but I have other suggestions. Drop me a PM if you're interested.

the arctic monkeys make some great dance music... maybe look into them. i think some people think they're annoying, but hey, they're good for what they do.
and you NEED to include "Danger! High Voltage!" by the electric six, because it is the coolest dance song ever.

especially if you watch the video.

Daft Punk...is what I would call good dance music, but not techno. I suppose...Electronica? Anyways, I'm a rocker, but I always had a soft spot for Daft Punk. I just recently bought their first album 'Homework'. That has some good tunes.

I also bought Death From Above 1979's remixed album. So, it is some danceable rock music. I'm sure there are tons of remixed rock songs that you can find out there. The 'clubified' rock music.

There is this great Canadian dance group, although they might be hinging on the verge of techno, called Deep Dish.

Shout Out Out Out Out Out Out is the best damn dance band I've ever seen. You can't help but dance when you hear their stuff. However, they are incredibly hard to locate/download on the internet. But, if you can find it, it is totally worth it!

"Dance" is a hard genre of music to classify (but I guess so is every other genre). A lot of people classify dance as techno, which has about a billion other sub-genres (drum and bass, jungle, electonic, hard dance...), none of which I call tell the difference. People try to explain it to me, and some of them are kind of easy to tell, but most of the time, I just classify it all as techno.

Does anyone have any advice on how to tell the techno genres apart?

I'll second this. Try their song "Dreams" featuring Stevie Nicks.

I'm assuming by deep dish you mean these guys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Dish
(they're actually american, byt George is On is a pretty good cd)

Shout out out out out is actually playing a CD release party at the HIFI next Aug 8th and 9th.
I actually just saw them at a big party up near edmonton a couple of weeks ago.

As for the genre's of electronica, Techno is merely one of them, the main ones being: House, Trance, Techno, Jungle, Breakbeat, hardcore and downtempo
(although some people say every type of electronica is just a different version of house)
Main distinction:
House is 4/4 beat, around 130 bpm usually. House is like soul/funk
Trance is also a 4/4 beat, but often around 150 bpm. it's more repetitive than house, but is usually known for longer break downs, etc.
Techno is like music made by robots, very mechanical, varies in BPM
Jungle is angry (I think)it's got a certain beat to it (I can't describe it here, you'll have to listen to the site below)
Breakbeat is kinda like house, but with a broken beat, its not 4/4. most hiphop beats are breakbeats.
Hardcore is that super fast (like techno at 180bpm) it's either angry as hell, or filled with sugar.
downtempo is well, downtempo... slower beats, ethereal, world music, etc. fit in here.

A great page that explains all the various genre's and sub-genres is tis one:
