Wideman with salary retained would bring in a good return for sure, but it would all but eliminate us from playoff contention.

Who's gonna replace his minutes? Smid? Wotherspoon? Potter? ...

2 weeks ago, LA is getting fleeced in this deal.
Now, they're the hottest team in the NHL with 5 weeks of hockey left. I think this is a relatively good short-term deal for the Kings. They are sure poised to be a contender again and the addition to depth and skill on the blue line will help out a lot. Obviously in a win-now mode and may as well attempt to capitalize on it.

 Calgary - what's your answer?
 |
unlike most of those teams, Calgary does not have the depth to make the big splash at the trade deadline and therefore I would not be mad if we did not acquire a big impact player

I could easily see Sekera signing there too, similar to Gaborik did last year. Carolina gets its pick and youth, LA gets a top pairing guy to replace Voynov, win win.

Maybe on a bottom feeder.

Outside of last years 44 point campaign, he has cracked 19 points 1 other time in an 8 season career. (He's on pace for 28 this year, or less than Dennis Wideman already has).

If that is a bonafide top pairing Dman to you, then have at it. I don't think he breaks into the Wideman-Russel pairing here in Calgary and probably starts on our 3rd pairing.

Enlighten me as to why this career 15-20 pt Dman who averages less than 20 min TOI per game career and gets paid 1.75 mil/season in his 8th NHL season is a bonafide top pairing Dman. Hit me with it.

You didn't even know who Hunter Smith was. Come on, man.

			Which would you rather have?
 Franson + Santorelii or Sekera?

 NSH 1st + Leipsic or LA 1st + McKeown?

Sekera is a good defenseman, but he's not a top pairing defenseman on a decent team. Realistically he'll be a 2nd pairing guy in L.A. and that's what he probably is ... no way he bumps down Muzzin from the first pairing IMO. Second pairing with Martinez seems more likely.

Thinking they will steamroll into the playoffs and make a deep run.

This will get interesting if Voynov comes back.
 |
If he came back just for the playoffs (unlikely) would it count against the cap?

no. There is no salary cap during the playoffs. The issue is if Voynov comes back after the trade deadline and before the regular season ends.

Right. I guess he would have to be on the roster at deadline time to qualify for playoffs anyway so my scenario couldn't happen

As a buyer, Franson and Santorelli absolutely. As a seller, I think it's a wash. IMO Carolina gave up less and still got about the same return as Toronto ... so to me, Nashville and Carolina win.

My understanding is Voynov is on the roster and would qualify for playoffs. Just suspended.

Franson + Santorelii or Sekera? (Franson over Sekera straight up, no question. Santorelli is just a bonus).
 NSH 1st + Leipsic or LA 1st + McKeown?

I thought he was designated a non-roster player. Though maybe that changed when the league allowed LTIR.

Wideman, yes
Gio, no.

Not all that impressed with McKeown, his numbers have fallen flat this season. Think there are plenty of comparable prospects in the Flames system.

I don't get this trade from the Kings perspective. Their D is already very solid, not only that but Sekera is a poor man's Martinez imo. Maybe a sign that Martinez is out long term.
