I totally agree with you. I already think Buffalo is ahead of Edmonton as their pool of defensemen is better than the Oilers already.

Very difficult trade to say who 'won' because there are so many unknown variables.
First, Kane is the best player in the trade, so there's that.
And IMO, Bogosian is the 2nd best. However, that is debatable. I think Bogosian is better than Myers right now, but Myers has more upside. Probably fair to say that they are a wash.
That means Kane for:
Armia, who could become a top 6 player and may be nothing.
Lemieux, a 2nd round pick whois putting up ok numbers, but a lot of people seem to like. How Button calls him guaranteed top 6 I will never know, but again, he's an unknown.
A late 1st. There's a decent chance that one of the Islanders or Blues makes the SCFs, and a very good chance that at least one of them is a division winner, so the pick is probably in the 27-30 range. So basically a 50-50 chance of a good player.
Stafford, a UFA who is probably worth a 3rd, maybe a 2nd at best.
So first the defensemen: either one of Bogosian or Myers could improve and tip the scales in favour of their team. But for now, they balance out.
So the question is: what does Wpg have with all these magic beans?
If they get 2 good players out of this, and Kane remains an inconsistent 25-3- goal scorer, Wpg looks really good.
However, it is entirely possible that they end up with nothing from those three futures.
So considering all that, I think it's a pretty even trade. Buffalo gave up a whole bunch of possibilities for a very talented head case. And the teams swapped under-achieving defensemen.
This will be a fun one to re-evaluate in 5 years.

I agree with your premise on tanking. But in no way, shape or form is Evander Kane making anyone a powerhouse.
He will be an interesting complimentary piece with Reinhart and McEichel, though.

It's a fair comparison.
Myers and Phaneuf are great comparisons. Both young, once very highly thought of but viewed as "struggling" at the times of their trades.
Sutter rushed the deal and got a pile of rubbish in an attempt to save a doomed season.

I just don't know if it's a smart move to shake up your roster and make changes on your blue line in the midst of a playoff chase.
Unless Myers is really an immediate upgrade on Bogosian, which i'm not sure about, then why not pull this trade in the off season?

Personally I believe it was a good "hockey" trade for both organizations. Koodoos to both GM's. The best part is we dont have to hear these names in every damn trade speculation for the rest of the year.

I love this trade. It is a blockbuster that rarely happens anymore and virtually never happens mid season. This is much different than the Phaneuf trade which screamed desperation from Sutter.
The Sabres add 2 young pieces they can build around. Bogo is a nice swap for Myers and it could work out for both teams. The Jets get a new look on D and keep pace with the size of the West. Stafford helps now bit the first, and 2 pretty good prospects is nice for the future.
I truly think this is a win win today and only time will tell in the future.

I think the intended comparison is Kane and Phaneuf as once highly ranked prospects who were problems in the DR, and who get traded in a larger package. The Jets got the better return (mind you Ian White was OK, and Stajan is still with the Flames and while not some offensive god, playing a useful role).

Agreed. However, acquiring a 23-year-old player instead of a 19-year-old accelerates things for Buffalo a little. Kane will be an immediate help when he returns next year.

I think Winnipeg won this trade for this season. They gained a veteran player who can score in Drew Stafford. I don't consider losing Evander Kane a lost to Winnipeg because they already lost him a few games ago and he's already out for the season. They probably lost one of their defenseman in Zach Bogosian but they received another defenseman who logged so many minutes in Tyler Myers. Imagine playing against the twin giants Myers and Byfuglien??

Is it a gamble that they could turn out to be better? Sure, but likewise they could also plummet value wise. I will gladly take Chevy's current drafting and prospect pool over what we got in 2011 when the Thrashers moved here.

You guys completely missed my point.
I was not evaluating the trade based on where these players were drafted.
I was simply making a commentary on how poorly the Thrashers/Jets handled and developed their lottery picks. It is simply an illustration of how it CAN go when you have lottery picks (see Oilers, Edmonton) and that there are no guarantees with draft picks. Even really high ones.

Just Listening to Tim Murray's presser on the trade.
Spoke highly of all players involved. The intriguing comments were towards Ted Nolan.
"What's do you think of Ted Nolan so far?"
" We're a 30th place team. Granted we are not the most talented team in the world, but
we are constantly evaluating things game to game"
They'll have a new coach at the end f the year I think.

I'm just saying, Buffalo is in line to have 2 elite centers after this year's draft but with no legitimate top line talent on the wing. If they want to be a powerhouse they need exactly the kind of game that Kane can bring at the position he plays. To say that this is them tanking when they're clearly building to be an offensive power is just moronic.

Agreed. This has nothing to do with tanking and everything to do with building a contender.

no kidding, they were already more than bad enough with those guys playing
why on earth would they keep a UFA? and they have been looking to trade Myers for a while now by all reports (hockey trade not talking about giving him away)

Buffalo with Kane, Hodgson, and Stewart (for now). 5 years ago a team would love those building blocks but all 3 have huge question marks about off ice
