I'm sorry, who are you? I don't start troll threads and I'm not a liar. We are getting a cat and all the criteria I listed is true. What, exactly, is so hard to believe about a suburban family wanting a cat and the dad is not very happy about it? There are probably 500 guys in Calgary right now in my exact same boat.

Fork out the money and get a Sphynx. Mine has personality to spare, does not shed, and is like a living sucky hot water bottle. Would never own a different species of cat again if I were choosing. I have two Siamese as well, they are bats##t crazy! Don't get a Siamese.

For that reason alone, you and your family should not be getting a cat. If the entire household can not be 100% "in", then it's not a good idea and the pet will suffer in the end, along with your relationship with your family.

How is it fair to the cat when you don't like them and most likely won't care for them? Will you just ignore all it's wants and needs?

A sphinx sounds dope. I'll check that out. I'm also looking at Russian Blues. The teacup cats can have inbreeding problems which could be a pain to stay on top of. Probably have a shorter life span as a result, which isn't the worst thing in the world.

Dissentowner: What's the temperament of your sphinx like? Is it cool with being left alone all day? Good with kids? My daughter is a bit apprehensive around animals so I want to make sure the cat I get is mellow around her.

I don't see how. Plus sacrificing some of my comfort to bring my wife something that will make her happy is a trade off I'm happy to make for her. She'd do the same for me.

We're not talking about a small change to the house. A cat will fundamentally change the over-all dynamic of the household.

It's not a new desk or TV. It's a living breathing animal, that requires everyone's attention.

Cats can sense when people don't like them or want to be around them. I guarantee the cat will make YOUR life hell (although I'm sure you've decided this already). Along with that, that vengeful attitude will be passed onto your kids and wife.

Really, a squirt gun is a great way to train a cat. I found it quite effective and didn't result in any negative consequences or fear based behaviours in the cat.
